More power to your elbow. (22)

For the past few months I have been suffering with tennis elbow; a painful experience, as any one who has suffered with it will know.

Yesterday evening I was, finally, administered a Cortisone injection and today I am in even MORE agony... I had a wakeful night due to the pain of moving my arm (actually, I don't even have to move it for it to feel very painful!) and this morning I realise that it would be daft to attempt to drive in to work (even pushing the duvet off me to get out of bed was an excrutiatingly painful episode). I have taken pain killers but the pain is indescribeable!!! I hope this doesn't last too long, I hate feeling all feak'n'weeble!! :(

Thought your doc would have told you, that after the injection it will hurt for a few days.

All he said was "take it easy for a couple of days."

I had the same problem in my other arm about 3 years ago, the injections didn't cause me any additional pain, in fact relief was the result, almost immediate!

I really hadn't expected it to feel THIS bad, this time!

Thanks... Until last night I didn't know what all the fuss was about, with regard to Cortisone injections - as I said, my first experience of them was all good, this time it's a totally different kettle of fish.

I have them quite regularly into my knuckles and can confirm that after-pain is quite normal. My consultant told me it was because you're injecting the steroid into an area that's already inflamed, so initially it's going to make it feel worse, which, if you think about it, makes sense.

Give it 24-48 hours, after which the pain should start wearing off and you'll (hopefully) reap the benefits. I have them because I have arthritis and tenosynovitis (similar to tennis elbow)in my hands, and the injections allow me to use my hands without too much pain or that stiff tight pain you get with inflamed tendons for 2-3 months at a time. Worth it I reckon!

Yes, it will be worth it... three of these injections cured the problem in my other arm, three years ago... I am hoping it will be the same with this arm.

Sorry to hear of your problems but glad to hear that the injections benefit you.

My joints have never swollen, it's just that the tendons above and below my elbow have felt (even more so at the mo!) very badly bruised all the time, it's painful to extend my arm, it's been painful to grip anything and my grip is not at full strength because of it.

I know it will get better but I don't normally feel so much pain and so useless.

Sorry to hear about your joint/tendon related problems, too - I hope they don't cause you too much pain, too frequently.
