Public sector pensions for the most part are unfunded. That is, they are paid for out of taxation. So an ever increasing burden is placed on all taxpayers. So whatever the pension expectation of the public sector was, it cannot be sustained. "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

I'm so pleased I read this, it's made me all warm inside! I really don't understand this "we pay your wages attitude". You do understand that public sector workers pay tax too don't you? I'm thrilled to know the public that I work so hard to protect have such a high opinion of me. I can safely say I work damn hard and deal with "the stuff of nightmares" on a daily basis. Oh and that's including the best part of Christmas day, New years eve and New years day, this year! (Sorry son) Idle I am not! I imagine it's also Ok that pensions are cut and my wages don't keep up with inflation whilst those in the private sector pay themselves bonuses from taxpayers money ? I'm loving this divide and conquer attitude, perhaps the con-dem government hopes that we will be so distracted bickering amongst ourselves, we will fail to notice the shambolic excuse for democracy we are putting up with. popi x

Err, sorry. Your talking about a TINY minority of the private sector. The majority aren't receiving bonuses, can't afford a pension anywhere near what 'Public' employees get AND, 'public' employees, as a whole, earn more than 'private'. It was a trade off years ago, not so well paid but better pension as compensation....now better paid AND far better pensions that 'most' in the private sector can afford. 178 Don't knock down fences until you know why they were put up.

Err, sorry. Your talking about a TINY minority of the private sector. Oh well, that's alright then! Unfortunately the sums in question aren't tiny. Don't get me wrong I'm not having a go at the vast majority of the private sector, I think we should be sticking together though. Edited 1 Dec 11, 6:59 PM by popi

And in return he makes more money for the BBC from sales of Top Gear rights pretty much any other show that BBC produce! He deserves the wage, without him the BBC would be a far poorer place. Literally.

I worked in the public sector, I watched colleagues rehash work year after year, pass on work to others, not turn up to teach, take months off for 'stress related' illness. Yet when I, lower paid, with no pension had three weeks off with double pneumonia (and went back to work too soon), it was an inconvenience to them. When the job drove me to a near nervous break down, they piled the pressure on, after 13 years two of them tried to get me dismissed (they had to apologise). After 15 years I left, I simply couldn't take it anymore, I sometimes get panic attacks just thinking about them, I left 18 months ago, I haven't worked since, I'm lucky enough to have enough to support myself for now. And where were the Unions when the Labour Government trashed the private sector pensions? Sitting on their arses, not their problem. I have no time for them and their bloody whinging, I'm with Clarkson! http://www.flickr.com/photos/jezzebelle/ |
