Truly saddened to hear that he has just died.
He was one of the most interesting movie directors in the UK and was possibly the first director where I remembered his name, because of the various composer biographies that he made in black & white television days.
He not only influenced my interest in the visual image and story telling, but also introduced me to some great music that I had not been aware of prior to that.
He was a fascinating man, not by any means the easiest to get on with, but a wonderfully imaginative man and many of his movies had scenes that would have appealed to BDSM devotees.
Oddly enough, I had only been watching "The song of summer" a few weeks ago when I found it on-line and it was every bit as good as I remembered from the 60's.
"The Rainbow" is by far his stand out movie for me. I loved the book, but his version of it was truly fabulous in so many ways.

A sad loss; he was a huge creative talent. "Wisdom begins in wonder” (Socrates) |

I was very sorry to read the news this morning. A director with an inspired visual sense, a true ability to introduce drama where it was required, and a real appreciation of classical music - very rare in the film world. A wonderful mix of abilities that produced some memorable and classic films. 'To loose' means 'to let go'. 'Lose' means you can't find it. 'Discrete' means separate. 'Crescendo' means 'growing'. 'Fulsome' doesn't mean 'full'. 'Unique' doesn't mean 'very unusual'. |

Not keen on the man presented, but found his view of cinema
vibrant and he definetly had a good eye for the story. You want me to do what with that???. How about I just do this, and twist it that way???? feels good does it, niceeeeeeeeeeeeee. |

A quote I saw somewhere was: "he made some great films, some good films, some bad films, but never boring ones". Apologies if I've misquoted this but the gist is correct! |

The original enfant terrible .. I hope he's in heaven with Alan Bates, and Oliver Reed now having one hell of a party.. Defiled is my name full sore Through cruel spite and false report That I may say for evermore Fairwell to joy, adieu comfort For wrongfully ye judge of me Unto my fame a mortal wound Say what ye list, it may not be Ye seek for that shall not be found.. Russell fans might be interested to know that you can view his banned Monitor feature "Dance of the Seven Veils" in its entirety on youtube. That moment in "Song of Summer" where they carry the nearly blind Delius up the mountain so that he can see his last sunset should guarantee Ken's admission to Elysium.
