I have a feeling I've just had some one try to feed me a hearty helping of Bull Sh1t.
I've just popped up to the local shop, I only wanted a few bits, so a little walk with the dog sounded a good idea, I was going to pay for the said bits on my debit card, well I was until I was informed there is now a 60p per transaction charge for using a card in the particular shop. The owners wife went on to explain that its not their fault but rather the banks have instructed them to charge any one this 60p charge if they pay with a card.
As the amount was only just over £10 I asked if it was because it was a small amount, but no, apparently its going to apply to any one wanting to use a card in their shop, I know one regular customer they have just lost.
Question is, is this legal or just a nice little earner for them ?

Quite a few businesses now charge a premium for paying by card. Basically they'e passing on the charge they get from the bank to you the customer. And yes, its legal "The most powerful sexual organ in the body is our brain, open your mind and allow your fantasies free reign. Mutual pleasure between consenting adults is a wonderful thing."

Could be worse apparently Ryanair and Jet2 charge £8 per booking for debit cards. I think given how business is being squeezed by the recession that some have taken a decision to pass those costs on as a way of protecting profit margin. However as you've already decided, many customers will vote with their feet and go elsewhere that doesn't charge. Most will only charge on small transactions so that it's not a sale that incurs a net loss. Strange to think in some respects we're being driven back towards a cash society when cash is all but disappearing from our purse and wallets. This charge normally applies to a credit card. Debit cards do not normally carry such a charge.

Not so, some businesses charge for debit but not credit cards, or vice versa. "The most powerful sexual organ in the body is our brain, open your mind and allow your fantasies free reign. Mutual pleasure between consenting adults is a wonderful thing."

Yup. My corner shop charges 25p per payment, and mine is a debit card. Constructed almost entirely of filth.

Perfectly legal, generally done by smaller businesses with a lower turn over.

This almost happened to me the other day, too. All I wanted was 1 ltr of semi-skimmed milk and 1 ltr of soya milk... the cost of the two items was about 35pence short of £3.00... because of this and the fact that I wanted to pay with a debit card (I'd not got enough cash in my purse to pay with cash) I was informed that there would be a charge (I can't remember how much) but I questioned it and was told that unless I grabbed a Mars bar or something else to make it just over £3.00 then I would have to pay the charge. I left the milk at the till, went to the ATM at the entrance to the same shop, withdrew £10.00 (a non-chargeable transaction) and got my milk at another shop (where it was also cheaper). I won't be dropping in for any necessities at that supermarket again. @The_Coven / @The_Problem_Page, you might give the advice that someone needs. / I want the "Moon on a stick and the Stars suspended from bunting". / So many haystacks, so few needles! / Conserve conversation and converse about conservation! But the shop where you took the money out of the ATM earned a comission on your transaction, thats why they have them. And I was under the impression that there was no charge to retailers for debit card use but there was for credit cards, seems I was wrong. Sweetiejar |
