dropping exams would save a huge amount on the education budget and slim down a lot of the teachers workload | There are some people who do better at exams, there are some people who do better at coursework (a comparable example being those who can't cope with coursework, put it off to the last minute - and abuse from parents for not getting the results, or errors in the system, surely still apply).

Which UK universities have Klingon and Eastender degrees, out of interest?
Are long established courses like philosophy also on the chopping block, because they don't have a direct link to a job?

Now did I say they were english. The klingon one is american but the eastenders one is said to be english. Now as for philosophy,no that will not be cut. Why?We still need priest and rabbies.
| I assume we're talking about one particular country when talking about reform, otherwise every country is going to have different situations. (Is the Klingon one funded by the US Government? Not sure how it works in the US.)
I thought priests would often take other courses such as theology. I suppose they could take philosophy... just as people could take media studies. Sign the Consenting Adult Action Network's statement

Where is the link for the university providing a course in EastEnders?
What is / are rabbies? I guess you don't mean rabies as we definitely don't need that. But I don't know why you think priests and rabbis / rabanim have to study philosophy.
And if you bothered to read the papers rather than making stuff up as usual you would see that philosophy courses are being cut or under threat across the UK, Middlesex Uni, Metropolitan Uni, and the University of Northampton have all cut Philosophy. Meanwhile Keele, Greenwich and others have all put forward plans to cut it.

And you know why they are cutting philosophy? Because they think its an easy target. And that is totally wrong. They should be dumping degrees such as media studies, reforming computer based degrees so they teach the right computer language instead of the wrong one.Oh and beware what the papers write esp,the daily mail, the sun,the times, the independent(yes its not independent as you think it is), the I,the metro(the mail lite),the star and the express by Desmond "I own channel five and I am pornographer in chief" Wilcox.British papers make things up! http://empressm7.uboot.com/ http://www.socialkink.com/empressmartine Vampire, pro/lifestyle ts dom/switch.Ageplay mummy/aunty/AB,medical play, domestic, energy, outdoor specialist."Who you calling"@?!;:$£<Σ#"!" We need more programmers who can write and compile in C,C+,C++,Java and more people outside the degree system to write up HTML5 pages. At the moment I not seeing this happening at the moment. http://empressm7.uboot.com/ http://www.socialkink.com/empressmartine Vampire, pro/lifestyle ts dom/switch.Ageplay mummy/aunty/AB,medical play, domestic, energy, outdoor specialist."Who you calling"@?!;:$£<Σ#"!" Java is pretty much THE language that Comp.Sci depts teach though. I think there are huge problems with preoccupation of teaching such undergraduates Java or C but it's not like they aren't being taught these things.
Also HTML5/CSS3 are still in draft so it's probably a little premature for universities to be teaching those. To say nothing of the fact that it/they aren't a programming language. |

My understanding is that the Government had transferred the bulk of the cost of providing Tuition from itself ( i.e. the Taxpayer ) directly to the student.
I am unclear what arrangements have been made to compensate Universities for the Expensive courses that cost more to run than the current (up to ) £9K per annum charged to the student.
With respect to particular courses, ( sociology etc. ) they will continue as long as students feel that they are worth paying the fees for. Such courses are "good" for the educational provider, compared with science etc., as the cost of running them tends to be lower and therefore such courses are more profitable.
Although I am not advocating this, I can see some of the Russell Universities going private and charging a "market fee", which, based on what foreign students pay, will be considerably more than £9K a year.
Eventually, I can see some second and third tier Universities adopting lower fees. This will happen when students realise that if you can get a better product for the same money then there is little point ( other than geographical convenience ) in buying a poorer product.
( Better / Poorer being used with the meaning of "being likely to help you get a better job / earn more money )
What I would like to see is the re-introduction of free University education.
In my opinion, the Government has perpetrated a "con" with tuition fees as it is getting people to pay twice for their education. Once via fees and secondly via enhanced taxation due to increased earnings. |
