That's about it really. A couple suffered a terrible tragedy 4 years ago. Their daughter went missing, presumed dead. In the 4 years since, tens of thousands of other children around the world will have gone missing presumed dead ( http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2011/10/06... ). But this couple with their strong lobbying skills seem to think their plight is a national tragedy, should dominate the news agenda again and again, and deserves a disproportionate share of police resources on a case which is almost certainly futile. It's a very sad situation for them, but it's not news and not a national tragedy.

It IS news for them - if this had happened to you wouldn't you do everything to keep it in the public eye? If your daughter went missing would you say : "oh no, we must stop hogging the headlines, lets leave the police alone to concentrate on something else?" Course you bloody wouldnt. You would do EVERYTHING you could to find her - no matter the cost. I

I am rather surprised at this from one of IC's more thoughtful voices. Today wasn't about their daughter. It was about the media, and how the urge to create stories has overcome the passion to report news. I thought they had points worth making. My goal - to save women from nature (Dior)

Ditto. Not only did something terrible happen - their child was snatched - but an additional injustice was done when a biased and incompetent police force botched the inquiry and went after the wrong suspects, thereby potential prejudicing a proper investigation. I do accept though that there is a limit to how much public (e.g. police) resources should be dedicated to any one case and that all child abduction cases need to be investigated, not just those which have managed to stay in the public eye. My heart goes out to them and to those in similar situations whose children are missing. There's a somebody I'm longing to see, I hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me

I can see your point, but ... I do think that although they were irresponsible about leaving their children alone in the first place etc. and they did court the Press, they were also given a pretty rough ride and had some terrible accusations made about them, to which they were unable to respond. So I think it's right for them to be finally given a voice ... I just hope it doesn't result in weeks of news coverage as, as you say, others do not get the same advantage and it no longer appears to be a solvable case. They also appear to have been the victims of a pretty shabby Portuguese police investigation initially, where vital DNA and opportunities were lost, so I feel they had no option but to launch such a high profile campaign. I'm sure any parents given that choice in that situation would have done the same. Put me on a pedestal, but be there to catch me if I fall.

No, of course its not a national tragedy. Have you got a degree in stating the fucking obvious, or what? Your point is...well, pointless.

Yes, I do see what you're all saying. I'm from the same part of the country as the McCann's, and they seem to be on our local news at every possible opportunity - anniversaries, birthdays, launch of a new website or book, etc etc. I switched off when they appeared again tonight; perhaps Belassarius is right and they had something newsworthy to say. the aspect for you is McCann wearyness i feel, for me is stupid bloody football, and prats who will spend £45.00 plus on a 'club' teeshirt yet bulk at the idea of spending £3 with Adsa splashed across the front,, one provides essentail good's,, the other is also just a brainwashing company concern but not providing anything of value. Please excuse crap spelling cause i,m rubbish

I get fucking annoyed at the mere mention of them. Yes this was about phonehacking but sorry parents who leave their children whilst they go out for a meal if they had have been on the social they would have been looking at a prison sentance for child neglect. Sorry I am with you on this.

I think that probably makes a difference - if you get news of them regularly. Although I think the McCanns story is fairly divisive anyway, and not everyone is sympathetic to their plight, beyond the tragedy of losing their daughter that way. Put me on a pedestal, but be there to catch me if I fall. |
