There's an article about sex workers in Time Out this week. p22-24, Can't find it in the online version. So far so good. From a BDSM POV the contributors are @londonfaerie who gives a pretty decent account of himself and his activities. The other is Ms Tytania, a domme. Her piece looked OK until I got to: ".....The kinky scene is uaully connected with a fetish for Nazi uniforms..."
Whatever your views on Nazi based BDSM play - I will declare myself as agaisnt it - this is just plain false. It also cannot possibly help the public's view of BDSM. I don't think I am selectively quoting here to give a wrong impression. I suppose it's just possible that Time Out has edited her piece to give a false impression. PS: Please do not use this thread to discuss Max Moseley, there are plenty of other places to do that. Edited Sat 19 Nov 11, 4:50 PM by leopard99

Hmmm. Ms Tytania is a highly intelligent, sophisticated and articulate woman, who used to be active on IC but is sadly no longer so. I can't imagine she said what the quote says; she knows the scene far too well. From my experience of having worked with the media occasionally, I do know that they often get the wrong end of the stick, and almost every story contains a few errors, especially if it's in a "quirky" area which they don't really understand. It is therefore a shame that she mentioned the word Nazi at all - or wore something that "invited" the reporter to ask the question. Having some journalist friends who freelance for TimeOut and other similar publications - I cant believe the journalists plucked the word Nazi out of thin air.

I know and am friendly with Ms Tytania. I read the article and she is clearly critiquing the scene and the stereotyped cliches such as 'Nazi uniforms' and 'high heels' that people might automatically think of when they think what is kinky. She was saying she prefers to do female domination differently with her own 'bovver booted' anarcho-feminsist 'Urban Chick Supremacy Cell' I am surprised that anyone could misread her mentioning Nazi uniforms as meaning she identified it with bdsm. Quite the opposite. Mistress of @paulss My PD blog at http://mistress-keene.blogspot.com/ http://twitter.com/#!/Mistress_Keene

I agree with Ms Valentine about the point Ms T is trying to make in the article. I also know Ms T and she is vehemently anti fash. Edited 19 Nov 11, 7:33 PM by TheMarquise

Ms T is familiar with the way journalists work. She is quite clear what she wants to express and I do not see any ambiguity in what she has expressed.

I am happy to stand corrected - taking a sentence out of context without any background has obviously distorted slightly.

Quite happy to accept journalists do lie and make things up - would just be very surprised if those practices existed within the publication in question - which is what I was commenting on.

I can't find the article online either. Perhaps the short quote above was taken out of context, and when she says it's "usually connected with a fetish for Nazi uniforms" she means it's "often mistakenly associated with a fetish for Nazi uniforms". Context is all, and perhaps the OP or perhaps Time Out may not have given sufficient context for typical readers (who don't know Ms Tytania) to understand how the sentence was intended. It is always a risk talking to the media though. They rarely get things 100% correct, sometimes introducing a deliberate "angle" (or spin) by selective quoting, sometimes simply misunderstanding or slightly misrepresenting through sheer hurriedness.
