FWIW there is an advert in today's Independent promoting a feature in the Sunday edition: "Madam will see you now... Inside the secret world of dominatrixes (sic) (and why business is booming)". Edited Sat 19 Nov 11, 10:02 AM by Prior

Saw this on Facebook 2 minutes ago. I'd hardly call Ann Summers an S&M store, or dominatrixes as 'Britain's Dirty Little Secret'. Edited 14 Jan 2037, 2:03 PM by subbenn

I suppose my only real question is - Does anyone in the article (Madame Caramel, Cosmic, etc) feel like they've misquoted or mis-represented? Edited 14 Jan 2037, 2:03 PM by subbenn

I would agree on the latter but I would say that Ann Summers has more and more BDSM style kit in it. It used to be a page in the back of the catalogue which you didn't really look at but now there tends to be a far bigger section in each store which is often given pride of place.

This is a very generic, very vanilla introduction to scene players and the concepts of power exchange-based play. Something a few classes before BDSM for Dummies 101. What I find a bit "light", is that, after "a year of research", the author only quotes the same old surface coverage BDSM has gotten for years. There's nothing 'new' in this article...nothing even the most vanilla of us hasn't seen before. As a photographic reference, the images pale by comparison to Doris Kloster's work (www.doriskloster.com). The article is as enlightened as the BDSM references it makes - Rhianna and Ann Summers. In other words, not very. Still, it's a mainstream article that suggests a trend towards a more accepting public. I long for that day. But based on this article, I'd have to say we haven't come all that far.

As Caramel posted a link to it on here this morning, I don't suppose so. She didn't make any other comment.

I think it's great to have these articles around, and while it may not say anything new to us on here, it is read by lots of nillas, who will have a better idea of what is and what is not bdsm. Also helps to draw the line between bdsm and abuse, which is really key for creating a better understanding and acceptance of what we do.

It seems as though recently there have been a few articales posted, in the Daily Mail, Metro and now the Independant. Whilst not really providing too much in depth information for those of us who are used to the scene. I would imagine for the nillas out there, this provides some kind of an insight into things which are normal to us. I was curious though how BDSM, becamse Bondange, discipline, submission and masochism. Dominance and Sadism could feel left out...

I'm curious as to how these are coming about. Are the papers contacting scene individuals looking for input. Especially
...seems odd. Someone who doesn't want to be interviewed being interviewed implies they are randomly approaching people at events? Clearly no one was exerting editorial control as there are two stray letter k's in the text. And all men kill the thing they love, By all let this be heard, Some do it with a bitter look, Some with a flattering word, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword!

I have spotted the two k's as well. The upside is that there is an opportunity to comment as well so we are in the papers!!
