I used to drive a small lorry for a living, and got to know the M1 and M62 far too well....if I ever get fit enough to work again I am NOT driving for a living, there are far too many people behind the wheel who should not be. I Hate Motyways!

Update. Customer got the day wrong, so his customer didn't turn up! So, rescheduled meeting for the 28th. So another 150 miles of motorway pounding wasted and yet another day for the delights of the M3 + M25 awaits. Ho hum, a salesman's job is all fun - NOT. Sic itur ad astra

Sounds like you need a new map or sat nav with traffic updates.
How about the classic cut through from the A34, M40, A43 to M1. If Humberside: M1, M18 to M62. If East of Wakefield: M1, M18, A1(M), M62. If West of Leeds: M1, A616/A628, A629, M62. If Across the Pennines: don't go up the M1!
That is not so bad when you become aware of people who commute epic distances (3.5 hours and 250 miles each way) just to get to work each day.
Why not just avoid the congested sections on the M3 and M25? A30, A272, A31, A3 A36, M27, A3 A36, M27, A27, A24, A240 A36, M27, A27, A23, M23, M25, A217, A24, A240
Plenty of routes then to the M3, M4, and M27.
