Bar the obvious jobs that most trans people do,it seems in india, according to Qi,last night, the indian government are employing trans people as tax inspectors,to get people who will not get their taxs paid up to date.So as question, outside the usual roles what unusal jobs have anyone done in a trans role?

What ARE the obvious jobs that trans people do? Not being sarky - it's a genuine question. The only "obvious" one I can think of would be the burlesque stereotype, and many aren't actually trans... @Play_Space - Next party is 23 October, Sunday, 5 to Midnight!

Poor phrasology I think - it's an unusual job (trans or not), because the reason they were hired was about utilising prejudice and negative perceptions in order to collect money for government. You're right - I think there isn't any job trans people 'usually' do here in the UK - trans people can, should and do allsorts of jobs. And shouldn't be getting excluded from any jobs in the UK - for transexual people it's the law to not discriminate on the grounds of trans status. In Pakistan (news reports claim - I have no personal experience of this) however, it is different.. having a job of any kind, other than begging, dancing or prostitution ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/interactive/2010... ) is unusual for transwomen, known as Hijra. - I think it was in Pakistan not India (different country) - and trans people are only just beginning to get some rights - see here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-13186... . Re the news story: the women are being hired as inspectors / collectors. I have seen this news story a while ago and find it a bit yeuchy to be honest. Many of the women who have been hired are living on the streets, in clusters for their own protection, having been rejected by mainstream society altogether and being excluded from employment, so some of them seem to be very excited about their jobs, which is understandable , as getting a job there is a big deal and means housing and food. Trans women in this part of the world are treated apallingly and subjected to rape and attacks on a fairly regular basis which is why they have to live in protective groups. The news item I saw, the interview with the department who employs them suggested said they had been hired in order use their 'special skills' to embarrass and shame rich people into paying up (presumably as people don't want little gaggles of transwomen seen on their doorstep or to have to talk to them). Pretty Grim by our standards, but the women I saw on the news item were delighted - they are living a very different experience to me - I can afford to be disgusted, perhaps they can't. You can find out more about the piece of news about the tax collecting jobs here, there's some film footage too http://atwar.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/18/pakist... That tends to be an obvious stereotype, burlesque that is.I know of a TV who works as an Avon rep.I would call that breaking the stereotype job/image. Welcome to the New Trans Group. A place for Trans people to talk and share experiences.

hum. I have never heard of this stereotype, perhaps it only exists on the burlesque scene? The Burlesque shows I've seen (admittedly not many) haven't prominently featured trans people as far as I am aware. De Vote to repeal the kinky porn ban! http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/282427/

Tbh, I should have used the term "stage acts" maybe, but I didn't think of it at the time. I didn't want to use "drag queen" as it sounds really offensive to me and I didn't know if it is to other people.

OK I'm finally catching up with you.
Oh Drag Queens! Yep I've heard of those Not heard of a Queen being offended by the term Drag Queen.. but there's always one eh! Oh yes Queens have a huge place in LGBT history having been right up the front during the first big US protests.
In the UK.. From what I know, a few are trans. Most Drag Queens are gay men who are settled in their gender tho However, for example, the 'ladyboys' of thailand who come over performing from abroad are often transwomen, advertised as drag.
Yeah trans people have long had a space in the entertainment world, everywhere in different forms. I see what you mean now. Dennis Vote to repeal the kinky porn ban! http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/282427/ Edited 21 Nov 11, 10:52 AM by Degenerate |
