Exactly my hypothesis. Men rule because, mostly, women don't want the hassle and responsibility. My experience is that in many apparently extremely patriarchal societies in the Middle and Far East, the Matriarch of a wealthy family actually wields ultimate financial, etc. power over all the men and women in the extended family, whilst apparently deferring to the men. One last thought for the OP and then I'll shut up: I wonder about the sense of patriarchy failing in a world which has taken us in a few brief centuries from feudalism to democracy, from walking everywhere to the motor car, holidays in the tropics by jetliner, even to the moon. From a subsistence diet based on bread or potatoes to exotic fruit and ready meals on the shelves of every supermarket, from illiteracy to the internet. We live in a world where, with a few exceptions, more and more countries are moving to tolerate diversity more than ever before. Yes, there are inequalities and injustices in the world. There always have been, but perhaps the Arab spring gives us hope that there might, in the future be a chance that people might have a real voice in their own future. So instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater by focussing on polarising things onto patri- or matri-archy, let's focus on building a sense of co-operation, collaboration and tolerance amongst everyone, so that we can face the complex social and environmental challenges that will face us in an overcrowded future. I wonder how a Matriarchal political party would get on?

I seem to remember that it was ruling in the Forest Fields/Hyson Green area of Nottingham in the mid 80s. It wasn't very much fun. Actually, that was probably the last time (outside the Modern Parents) that I ran into that 'Men Have Failed' thing, and I was very glad to have left it behind with the 1980s; nasty decade. I suspect there is more 'good' and caring consciousness in the world today than there was yesterday, more than there was 10,000 years ago, more than there ever has been across time. Nature, whether you are an earthworm or a quark, is a place of “constant conflict, warfare, genocide, slavery, injustice and poverty”. Was, is and will be. The “state of the world” is a perception defined by where you choose to place your attention. I believe the proportion of the population of the planet focussed on a constructive and caring approach to the world is more now than it has ever been. I believe there are more liberated groups of inspirational young people now than when I was the same age, determined to go out and build a better world. There is hope. I know, of course, that it will be a long winding road. Ultimately we will prevail. So don't buy into the latest media circus of all that is wrong with the world – 'twas just as much “conflict, warfare, genocide, slavery, injustice and poverty” in Homer's time as now. Focus your awareness on becoming the best you can be, Man or Woman. Influence the Universe by the choices you make, and understand that the ripples of our consciousness will spread way beyond our own pond. And connect with a Man or Woman, D or s, whose energy helps you to achieve this. And this is why I think this thread is right on the theme of IC. And in ways often unknown and unseen we will probably contribute to making the reality of our world a steadily better place. I don't know, I only believe. And that is enough for me.

I don't think the altermative would be any better! I have two lesbian lodgers who regularly bring their respective girl friends and friends home. I regularly come back from work to find 5 or 6 women in my house, (Lucky me I heard you say). But you wouldn't believe the in-fighting and bitching that goes on. I loose track of who's no longer friends with who etc. Women are just as bad as men, they just have a better public relations department! DL.
