Because I didn't book my blood donor session, I was told I would have to wait. After half an hour my name was still bottom of the list with piles of names on top, so I went home. I felt I was being treated, not as someone who was voluntarily giving up time (and blood!) to help others, but as someone who had made the mistake of not booking.
Surely there must be a better way of treating people who want to give blood, but, because of their work, are unable to book in advance.

If you log into their website www.blood.co.uk they have "walk in" clinics (usually those "vampire-vans") for which no appointment is necessary. If you can find one near you. It is art that makes life, makes interest, makes importance, for our consideration and application of these things, and I know of no substitute whatever for the force and beauty of its process.

PS well done for trying - more people should do it! Doesn't hurt, and you get free biscuits (and if you're a very irresponsible type it's also worth noting that you can go out that evening and get totally pissed on virtually nothing!). I don't think that one's on their website, though.. Before i took ill, i gave blood regularly. But, i have never known anywhere that you booked? That is news to me. I have always just went along, and given up my free time to donate to a worthy cause. Maybe it is different in certain areas, i don't know though. Good luck, and hope you manage to give a pint or many in the future

I never used to book, but then the past couple of times I've done so, or at least the time before last I did. My last visit I tried to books but there were no spaces in the several hour period I chose, so I just went down and got seen when I could. I had to wait about 30 minutes. Then a couple of weeks later I got a letter saying how they were moving to a bigger location up the road due to the increased numbers of people wanting to donate. So I'm not sure what's happened but it's seeming like there has been a big increase in donors and that's making it harder for them to keep up and fit people in. Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?

If I don't book I don't stand a chance of making a donation - that's a good thing as it shows that many people are doing their bit.

About 2 years ago I was advised to change from giving platelets to giving blood as they were finding it hard to get the blood flow for the 90 minutes to get the yield of platelets. I did but if I was ill then I would drop through the system for appointments, with only 1 evening a week for late appointments it was very difficult to get an appointment. They even make you call a central centre to make an appointment even though you are in their centre and they could make the appointment with you there and then. By the way I had donated for about 23 years accumulating enough points to be awarded the crystal decanter. So I am not moaning for a trivial reason. There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. I have a foot firmly planted either side of that line

I know exactly how you feel - I started donating in 1965 when I was at university. There is no greater joy than to serve a beautiful Mistress. |
