Her driving was excellent and we even got out on to the M25 and did a few miles of motorway driving.
I am constantly surprised that the basic test does not include motorway driving.

Which technically means that once you have passed (not driving on a motorway) then magically you become able to drive on a motorway. Of course extra motorway lessons are available but these are voluntary and not compulsory. I think there is a good argument for either making a motorway lesson or two compulsory or else tell learners they have to stay off motorways for (say) three months. i.e. until they have gained a little more confidence. Indeed but the law does not make them compulsory, which I find strange. There's a huge fuss to make sure you are competent on 'A' roads and then the law's attitude becomes: "Oh it's ok now. Take that car out on to a 70mph limit and into an environment where things happen a whole lot faster..." Very strange! Flogher - I cane, I whip, I cuddle

in most other countries, motorway driving is part of the test - it completely bemuses me that it isn't here... it's like saying oh we've trained you how to jump off a 3 ft high fence, and now we'll push you out of a plane with a parachute but without any training... insane! There's a somebody I'm longing to see, I hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me

It's part of the curriculum here. But to be honest, on a motorway, while cars go faster, they do all go in the same direction... Major A roads are a lot scarier if you have to overtake etc. And tiny little country lanes where you can't see around the corner while doing 50mph... <sigh> But I do agree it should be part of the driving course and the test. Seems a bit silly to not include it! “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act” - George Orwell |
