Darling Mother has broken her hearing aid Again! maybe fifth time this year. She phoned me up today to tell me, 'A bit has come off', and wanted me to go visit her as soon as possible to sort this out.
I told her 'No, I will see you Friday as arranged, and you can use your old hearing aid which we both know works'.
'Oh yes, forgot about that'.
Now it appears after a subsequent phone call that she may have broken that, too.
I've visited her on one occasion to find her banging £600 worth of nearly new hearing aid, hard, repeatedly, on the dining room table. Other times she's ripped the battery holder off (like today it seems) and wodged a battery down it's gullet.
And I'm supposed to be the one to immediately get on the bus and sort it. Not my bro, she doesn't phone bro, even tho he has a car.
I.Do.Not.Understand. This.Behaviour. She needs a hearing aid, but treats it like it's a lump of wood. She doesn't go breaking her specs or trying to smash her false teeth, so wtf?
I asked an old guy on the bus the other week how he got on with his hearing aids. He replied 'Oh they're grand, lad, they work fine, I'd be lost without 'em.' And he showed me from obvious habit how easy it was to adjust them etc.
Mum makes the hearing aid thing a struggle. Not that she actually listens when it is working. It seems like part of a peasant attitude that life has to be tough, and nobody else is allowed any fun either.
It's not a crime to be deaf, heaven forfend. But it is possibly a crime to be wilfully stupid.
