Welcome guests or party poopers ? (34)

I read this thread earlier - http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/318074/ - and it really annoyed me.

This is not me having a pop at not_a_member - or indeed at any guest on this site - but I'm really not sure I'm comfortable with people coming onto the site either to gawp at the perverts, or to laugh at the crazies.

I can understand that people might want to have a look around before they join - and that some people might feel more comfortable watching rather than participating.

But do we really want our innermost thoughts and goings-on shared with people who are not only not involved in the lifestyle, but ( in some cases ) don't even have an interest in kink ?

Would welcome other views..

I think the Guests have an interest in what goes on in our lives... if they didn't they wouldn't have done the "search" for sites such as this - also, maybe their lives are so boring that they have to get their kicks from watching people whose lives are not as boring.

Let them be, all they see are words and a few pictures here... it's not like they are in our houses with us. ;)

My view is that whilst it can be a bit annoying, or even a little intrusive, it's a neccessary evil.

The absence of a guest facility would exclude those who just want to have a look around before jumping in, and so allows those with a genuine interest, who may be a little shy, nervous or uncertain, to dip their toe in the water before taking the plunge.

It's like having a shop. Some come to browse, others to buy, and others still have no interest at all and just want to get in out of the rain.

*snip* ...gawp at the perverts, or to laugh at the crazies.

Oh, we're *not* supposed to do that here? Oops ;)

My initial reaction was the same actually but then we are all aware that anything we post is viewable to all, members or not. One of the reasons I bit the bullet and joined IC was because I could read everything and get a feel for the place before having to sign up.

Not so keen on the thought of people doing the pointing and laughing at me thing but then, they don't usually post to say they are, ignorance is bliss :)

I've long thought that the ability for guests to see everything is a bit pants. I'm not bothered personally by what they see, since I'm not too daft to know once you write something on't'tinterweb it's there for ever and ever and ever and anyone can probably get at it...

However, I do think that if someone does want to come in and have a mooch around, they can bloody well join up. It's not exactly much effort, is it? You can join up as bloody mickey mouse and just lurk for ever and a day for all I care, but join up anyway!

So no... I don't like the open access for any ol' perve. And I'm sorry, but loitering around a perve's website makes you a perve in my book ;-).

How could you stop this, though, short of a members-only and invitation-only site?

Surely anyone who's regularly viewing this site must have an interest in "kink", whatever nonsense he might talk to try to conceal this from himself?

Well, up and until today I would have agreed with you - but the thread I referenced has made me think twice about it..

I lurked for three years because all I used the site for was to laugh at the personal ads. There is a great deal of value to be had gawping at the crazies and freaktoids, imho.

I use a n other site which I consider 'safer' to be more myself, inasmuchas you can't get on to it without being a member, and most eejits are too thick to be able to navigate it, and I find this site incredibly parochial so I don't interact with topics which I might well do were they on a n other site.

The thread in question annoyed me as well...but then people like them can just join anyway (as he/she did) so don't think there's a way roound it.

It's a free site with guests allowed to see most parts. Of course people will find it. Either by idle browsing, or because they fancy a bit of tittlization. Some get hooked, and join. Some browse and laugh (Sometimes so do I! :)). Anyone who uses this site 'should' be aware of this.

Simple answer. Don't put anything up that you think might shame you later in life.
