My Laptop crashed last weekend, it happened whilst our dear friends at Microsoft were updating their system on my computer, nothing unusual about that I suppose, but this time it crashed and was not recoverable. I had to take it to a specialist to get the data off it! Since it happened I have become aware of a few others who suffered the same problem and in particular for two of them the computer had to be scrapped.
So, my question is - has anybody here had similar problems with their computers recently?
It would be interesting to see just how many people are inconvenienced and out of pocket while Mr Gates fills his pockets at our expense.
Oh, mustn't forget my favourite oxymoron here - Microsoft Works!

I've had a couple of computers die off after an update the other week. But I fixed with the start up repair tool and the other I fixed by re-imaging it with the original image I started off with only to find that all the software I'd added since was still there, which saved me many weeks of work.

I'm not a technical person when it comes to computers but apparently it was something to do with the auto restore not working correctly, when the computer was switched back on in safe mode and set to auto restore it just froze completely 'There's no such thing as a dirty book... it's just the way you read it" Alex Harvey

The computer is fine, it's just the operating system that screwed up and all you have to do is wipe it off and reload it and any drivers and programs and yer off and running again. Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?

Thar's exactly what happened to mine and it's ok now, but the two others I mentioned have lost the lot! 'There's no such thing as a dirty book... it's just the way you read it" Alex Harvey

Well with laptops an external hard drive caddy is very handy as you can take the drive out and plug it into another computer and recover stuff from it before wiping it and putting things back. Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?

Except most computers either (a) don't come with the Windows CD (and the owner never made a recovery CD when it was new and they had the chance) and (b) the recovery CD or OEM disk will often wipe the whole computer, including all of your data & settings. Great for killing a serious virus, a bummer if you actually had something important on it. Oh yes, I forgot to add (c) the users will normally have no backup of the data. If you don't know what you are doing then take it to someone who does! Of course, your kink may be exposed that way, so it pays to consider who carefully. And if you are reading this BEFORE your PC dies, how is you backup? What would you do when your PC is lost/stolen/dies? Bollocks spoken like an real expert.

Thanks everyone for your input, it's been very helpful, I've got everything backed up now and the laptop is hunky dory again, with no loss of data. 'There's no such thing as a dirty book... it's just the way you read it" Alex Harvey |
