i saw a reference to this on another post and not wanting to hijack someone elses thread i thought i might as well start my own.
i watched ricky gervais doing some stand up on tv and i can't say that i found it particularly offensive
has the world gone mad or is there really a need to make a big deal out of something like this ....
how many people does it take to make something an offense ... one person, two, a hundred, a thousand
retarded, moron, idiot, spastic ... who decides where the line is drawn ?

Yeah, I know what you mean. The white supremacists probably think the same thing about the N word. If people hadn't made a big deal of it, they'd have still been able to use it today. Bloody do-gooders!

It's about words being used in an offensive way?
So you don't see how it could be offensive to insult someone by saying that they are like a person with a disability? and by inference make the insult that there is something wrong with disabled people? If you look in the mirror and don't like what you see
You can find out first-hand what it's like to be me

i can see how the use of the word might offend some people, but making comparisons to the use of nigger is a bit ridiculous ... give your opionion by all means, if you are offended by the word mong then state your reasons but please leave out the crap.
so is it also offensive to call someone a retard .... it was a word used in the hangover for comedic effect without causing any fuss.
all for one and fuck the rest

If you're gonna use potentially offensive words/material in humour, you run the risk of offending people. I don't see a problem in offence per se, but if someone was continually using the same person or group of people as the but of their jokes, then i'd be worried.
I think comedians have the right to offend. I also think people have the right to be offended.
