Subsidies from London and the South East to the North of England and Scotland are one obvious point.

In so small part due to UK economic policy being skewed to the south easts interests, the seat of government being in london, etc, etc, etc....

If you look back a century or so, it was the north of England driving the economy. Before we abandoned the idea of actually building stuff, in favour of pushing piles of fictitious money around.

That is true. Even upto the 1920's and 1930's before the outbreak of WW2 Scotland was a serious industrial powerhouse relative to it's population size. It's shipbulding industry on the Clyde was world class. Plus huge in steel manufacture, coal mining and other manufacturing industries. The North of England too with textiles, cars, electrical appliances, steel, railway rolling stock, cutlery, potteries. You name it, Britain made it and sold it to the rest of the world. Often obtaining the raw materials from the colonies, shipping them to the UK only to manufacture them into products to ship back to the colonies to sell them extracting a huge profit along the way.

Although, history shows all empires come and go, some implode spectacularly, yet Britain managed to extricate itself without being destroyed in the process. However, the cost has been to loss its economic and miltary power and an economy reliant so heavliy on service industries including finance. Plus state owned assets sold off too cheaply then ending up in foreign ownership. The failure of successive goverments, corporate management, workers and unions collectively to work together and be competitive globally is to blame. Even, if you can't compete as a nation on price then do it on quality. When you price yourself out of the market and make crap e.g British cars in the 1970's what do you expect??

As regards subsidies from the South of England to the North of England and Scotland don't forget that some of the poorest people live in London and the South East. Several London boroughs are the poorest in the UK and living costs are the highest so it's NOT all great down sarf either!

'King' James apparently asked Guy Fawkes why he wanted to blast 'our' parliament. To blow you outsiders right back to your mountains, where you ---ing belong (our most unsung National Hero fast replied).

And the true facts re 'Hadrians' wall?

Adrian of the Geordies built it, in order to keep the jocks out. Especially those from falkirk, said Ade. And any called cameron, bliar, or broon, etcetera, ad infinitum....

In what possible sense was he a hero?

And all men kill the thing they love, By all let this be heard, Some do it with a bitter look, Some with a flattering word, The coward does it with a kiss, The brave man with a sword!

Hero in the sense he wanted to blow up a scotish king, but traitor in that he would have killed others who had nothing to do with the catholic/scots vs scots/prodies argument.

Empress, are you talking about V for Vendetta?

Btw, I've already stocked up on fireworks. They don't let us play with them at home...

Everyones a hero to someone, even if he did want to blow up a fledgling democracy and replace it with theocratic rule from rome.

Didn't make much odds in the long term. We got invaded by the Dutch fifty years later anyway.
