Has the 'hiding' of adult sites started already? (56)

I've noticed a posting or three on here of late concerning the potential requirement for ISPs (and others?) to make sites of an adult nature less conspicuous. I don't know if it's just a blip, but yesterday and again today when I tried to access Informed Consent via Google there was no sign of it! However, by adding the letters "bdsm" after, hey presto the familiar display was presented.

Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else experiences the same 'problem'.

I don't know whether it's a conscious effort on the part of Google to hide adult sites, but, just by adding bdsm, as the op states, brings IC up a treat, perhaps you have to be a bit more specific these days.

Perhaps a sites prominence depends on the hits it receives, & gets promoted or relegated accordingly. I have no idea:(. A.

Google's a CIA op, funded by CIA slush funds. Facebook too. Voluntary self-surveillance, oo-rah. Bet I sound like a right loon. It's all true, though.

One things that is true is that Google has started making adult sites marginally less accessible than other sites. When you type in words, some sites appear before you press enter, but these appear to exclude "adult" sites. Not sure of their reasons ...

I *think* the basis for that is that there is a lot of porn on the internet. Someone searching for "double helix in complex molecules" probably doesn't want to see the multitude of double penetration pages and a prompt to complete the second word as penetration after they've entered a few characters...

But I might be wrong, they may be thinking of the children.

Google's customer base includes children so they are simply being 'family friendly.' It used to be possible to change settings for searches so possibly you're set to family safe or something. Change the settings by clicking on the 'cog' icon in the top right on the Google search page.

Google's main aim is to produce relevant results for a new search. They may have changed their algorithm to avoid people using Google to navigate to a regular site and thus skewing the results for a particular phrase. In this case 'informed consent.' Basically - finding things you're already familiar with isn't what Google is for, so they've stopped you.

For those who want to find IC without having to type it in directly, have you thought of dragging the little IC speech bubble icon from the start of your browsers address bar onto your desk top? Once there, you can get to IC just by clicking on it. Also you can right click on it and change its title and icon to something innocent.

If two people google the same thing, they get different results. (They're watching you.)

For those interested here's a 9 minute TED Talk by Eli Pariser about how Facebook, Google, Yahoo news et al, create what he calls "Filter bubbles". All of these information feeds are being personalised without most people's knowledge and consent, by being tailored to what each result provider thinks you want to watch, as opposed to what you actually want to see.

The same happened to me. I had to add .co.uk and then it appeared.

Another method would be to type in bar at the top of the page:

www.informedconsent.co.uk

I'm surprised no one has thought of that.
