We run a massive trade deficit with Europe! Whist a trade embargo would hurt both sides, them instigating would be effectively poking themselves in the eye repeatedly.

If we left the EU at worse we would revert to pre existing trade agreements. Any Protectionism we would then face with the EU would be more than cancelled out as the rest of the world would not face that protectionism when trading with us.
So its better out than in. | |
