Death. taxes- and disappointment, surely (18)

"Gutted" and "deeply upset" might be too strong, but I am certainly unhappy and disappointed. I was finally SUPPOSED to be finding out, tomorrow at 1130, what the BLOODY HELL is wrong with my back. But I got a phone call at 1900 tonight- it's not happening. And the secretary will send me a letter to reschedule in the next few days.

I have been in CONSTANT PAIN since May. It has Never stopped hurting, not for one instant. I cannot function, I cannot go to work (needless to say, I am not earning and am now fully skint!), I cannot sit in a chair. And I have waited for the scan, and waited 3 weeks post scan for someone to tell me what's wrong! I am Tired of being in pain, and I am tired of waiting in the queue. I am ready for some answers.

And, I think I am becoming racist! I'm told my surgeon has left the country to return to the other side of the globe for a family emergency, and I know it must be a funeral and I ought to be compassionate and praying for him and his family, but as soon as I had said that prayer, my first thought was, "Why couldn't I have a BRITISH doctor? Then family emergencies wouldn't mean leaving the bloody country for god knows how many days if not weeks, and I could have some freaking answers!"

He wasn't even going to FIX me tomorrow, he was going to tell me WHAT'S WRONG and schedule when it would be fixed. That's all I wanted. Just some bleeding closure. Some answers. Some peace.

And I ate some M&Ms because I was unhappy. Darn my human frailty.

That's the NHS for you.

In April this year I had a bad back spasm which resulted in a trapped femeral nerve. I couldn't walk for 6 weeks.

The GP just doled out pain killers. My referral to a specialist back pain clinic got lost in the post. By the time I finally had my appointment I had learnt to self-traction my back to ease the pain.

The back specialist referred me to a physio to sort out the remaining issues and that referral got lost in the system too! I finally get to see them on Friday.

You have my sympathy and I hope you get your appointment and get better soon.

9months before they MRI'd was told Id have results last week, still waiting for that appt!

It sucks when you are in such pain for the wrong reason! I worked for the NHS for many years but eventually left due to the bureaucracy that seemed designed to prevent 'us' from really helping Patients. I re-trained and became a Solicitor! From puppy to shark in one fell swoop :-p

The one thing that really works now is to be vociferous. Unfortunately the louder you shout the quicker you will be dealt with. If your appointment is not rescheduled quickly I suggest you go back to your GP frequently, every day if necessary, who has the ability to refer you to private healthcare paid for by the NHS. Really it pays to make a nuisance of yourself.

If none of these can help you get the treatent you need and deserve then ring your NHS Hospital and ask for a copy of their Complaints Procedure, that will get them hopping about.

If you can possibly afford it I'd recommend seeing an osteopath - preferably a cranial osteopath - preferably from a personal recommendation.

I was 21 when I slipped a disc (I'm 59 now) and at the time the hospital's only suggestion was to put me in traction for (if I remember) about 6 weeks! Now, I'm as fond of bondage as the next man, but boy was I glad when my girlfriend took me to an osteopath instead, who sorted me out, remarkably painlessly, in about 3 sessions!

I still have recurring problems, though relatively rare (touch wood) these days, but when I do I visit a wonderful cranial osteopath who's never failed to put me right!

The beauty of the cranial osteopaths is that they have to be fully trained and qualified for osteopathy before they train for cranial, so tend to be more experienced.

However, I must say that the NHS scores if you actually require surgery. My niece had a back problem that required surgery to reshape a vertebrae to free a trapped nerve, and that went brilliantly! However, they seem to be pretty hopeless at lesser cases, however painful they may be, which just require physiotherapy. Worse than useless is the expression that comes to mind!

But be assured, if you have a problem that DOES require surgery a decent osteopath WILL guide you in that direction!

I have had back trouble for years, I had an operation which helped quite a bit about 20 years ago. My advice: Stay off painkillers- you can end up in a dependancy spiral....Bad,Bad,Bad. If you can, try lying face down on the carpet for a bit. Try gentle stretching exercises. Try swimming as gentle exercise. Sorry but no booze at all. Suspected as being one of the causes of bad backs ! Get and read the book of Mckenzie exercises. Cheers, Jim.

Intuitively, back-pain can be one of four things.

1. Something in the joints which is interfering with its functioning [e.g. excess calcium or arthritic deposits];

2. Something not in the joints which is inhibiting its functioning [e.g. magnesium deficiency, lack of cartilege between discs];

3. Something happening in the body which is causing back pain [e.g. slipped disc, constantly wearing high heels which brings poor posture, side effects from medication];

4. Underlying emotional and/or psychological causes [e.g. depression, of which it would be symptomatic.]

My recommendations [take them with a pinch of salt [see 2 for the type of salt]]:

1. 2 tsp unrefined, organic apple cider vinegar, 1-2 tsp organic honey and 1-2 tsp cinnamon. Take it as a herbal brew three times a day. The apple cider vinegar will dissolve arthritic deposits; organic honey is amazing for your joints as is cinnamon. If you don't like apples then blackberry cider vinegar works just as well.

2. Transdermal magnesium chloride/calcium treatment. Sea-salt baths are good, but make sure it's organic with no [and I mean no] synthetic additives. Himalayan pink salt might work well, unsure how the sodium would interact but it won't harm you to use it instead of table salt. In the case of cartilege deficiency, I'm unsure. If the problem is rheumatic in nature then get your domme to hit the afflicted areas with stinging nettles. This will draw out the damp and sort it out, in addition to being quite fun.

3. What's your posture like? Do you wear high heels all the time, even to work? Have you stopped this to see if they're contributing to it? Does your work involve a lot of sitting down?

4. Chill. I can tell you're vexed, but getting angry/upset isn't gonna help. Stress is a major contributor to back pain - Work might have stressed you out, caused the back pain, and you may have consequently transferred the stress you feel towards work onto the pain you're getting from your back.

5. See a spiritual healer... I used to have evil backpain. I worked in a hostel for homeless people, and got into a conversation with a resident. He said he was a spiritual healer, and asked me if I had any pains. I told him about my back, he asked me if I wanted him to heal me. I said yes. He told me to abandon expectations and see how it went [which I was planning on anyway.] Two weeks later, it'd gone. Shiz works =)

The sad thing is that most of the time you walk into a shop, there is nothing of any medicinal value in there whatsoever. But you don't know what poison is, do you? Neither do you understand why nutrition is kept away from your grasp.

That goes for your idiotic comedian as well. Back to the herd with you. If I spend time typing out help and you come along to mock it in a line, what precisely have you contributed? And yet, the remedies I've proposed - whilst by no means exhaustive - have healed people, even those with crippling arthritis and joint pain.

Nice try HC, a nice try at being nice and helpful, and a faster respose rate than the NHS, it must be said.

But...

HC, do you have some kind of a list pinned up next to your computer screen with disparaging names on it? (I'd like to think you do. I can just imagine you wetting the tip of your finger and running it down the list to see which name you're going to use next).

Tisk. I know every time you open your mouth someone decides to object to what you say, like its almost the accepted culture of IC now not to just leave you to say your piece but to feel entitled to deride your comments. Its almost acceptable bullying. Even NICE friendly folk are beginning to do it now.
