I had a similar problem with Three. I came to the conclusion that its not about censorship or protecting the innocent, its about making money from porn. Every time I tried to access an "adult" site, even Devus, which is compliant with PayPal's strict rules about images, I was not only prevented from viewing it, but I was simultaneously offered loads of "pay per view" sites from Three, which offered all sorts of uncensored filth if I paid a couple of quid to see them. So I think its about "this person wants to look at porn, lets sell them some of ours" rather than protecting anyone. I too went into the Three shop to get it unblocked (I told them I worked in the Adult business, they were enthralled, I didn't elaborate). They told me to call the call-centre in India, who offered me unlimited access to their own pornography sites for £5/month but could not guarantee that I would be able to access devus or IC or similar non-Three sites. I declined their offer. I had already proved I was an adult because when I took out the contract they charged £1 to my credit card and refunded it which they said was for just that purpose. I fixed the problem by installing the Opera mini-browser on my Nokia phone, and found I could then access any site I wanted, so its not even a very effective block. I now longer use Three, I have a Tesco SIM in my Android phone, and nothing appears to be blocked, but then Tesco don't have porn sites to flog do they... Chris

(and Tesco runs on the O2 network too). Chris

They are most certainly not legally obliged. I would be very careful with the O2 filter - when it was first applied to contract customers they leaked all the credit card details used to take the filter down, sent the details over plan text and then have lied about it ever since. Do not trust them with your card details. Go into a store - there are plenty of legitimate sites if you are concerned that are blocked and would be accepted without complaint, such as the lottery pages...

@mesmerone - Interesting to know about O2's foul ups. Always amazes me how incompetent huge companies can be about some things. Have you got more information on the legal issue (other than saying it's just not one)? What are the motivations for mobile operators to filter like this? Tell me that this isn't YOU.

I had a similar problem with 3 on my old Nokia but they lifted the 18 restriction with out any problems and I didn't have to pay. I am still with 3 but with a different phone and have been able to access both IC and Fetlife without having to ask. xxx

"Jack's name was on as few pieces of paper as it was possible for a person to be..." "... Jack paid by cash and travelled by road..."
You sound like "Jack Reacher" from the novels by Lee Child.

I have a feeling this will be across the board on internet suppliers in a few years. and a part of me is in agreement with why they are doing it, As long as its a simple private way to open up the sites again for those above 18 wanting adult sites. “Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”

It certainly does on my Orange pay-as-you-go SIM-only deal.

No so bloody simple with Orange. Look on their site and it says it's "straightforward" to remove "Orange Safegard" by calling 150 from the handset. So yours truly called 150, got swamped in an endless succession of menu options, eventually got through to an operator who sounded as if he hadn't a clue what he was doing, the operator then put me on hold (listenning to god awful, tinny "musak") while he called a supervisor ... and then, at last, I was told Orange Safeguard was gone. Yet to see if it actually is - but sure as heck no easy process! *UPDATE* Model(s) for "how to" bondage photographs (and other bondage photographs) have now been found. Thank you to all who showed interest. |
