O2 and censorship of over 18 sites (30)

I had a similar problem with Three.

I came to the conclusion that its not about censorship or protecting the innocent, its about making money from porn.

Every time I tried to access an "adult" site, even Devus, which is compliant with PayPal's strict rules about images, I was not only prevented from viewing it, but I was simultaneously offered loads of "pay per view" sites from Three, which offered all sorts of uncensored filth if I paid a couple of quid to see them.

So I think its about "this person wants to look at porn, lets sell them some of ours" rather than protecting anyone.

I too went into the Three shop to get it unblocked (I told them I worked in the Adult business, they were enthralled, I didn't elaborate). They told me to call the call-centre in India, who offered me unlimited access to their own pornography sites for £5/month but could not guarantee that I would be able to access devus or IC or similar non-Three sites. I declined their offer. I had already proved I was an adult because when I took out the contract they charged £1 to my credit card and refunded it which they said was for just that purpose.

I fixed the problem by installing the Opera mini-browser on my Nokia phone, and found I could then access any site I wanted, so its not even a very effective block.

I now longer use Three, I have a Tesco SIM in my Android phone, and nothing appears to be blocked, but then Tesco don't have porn sites to flog do they...

Re Phones, I'm pretty sure the phone companies are legally obliged to ensure that phone SIMs have porn blocks on them (oh god, think of the children). It wasn't hard to get mine lifted. I just asked for the adult filter to be removed (totally cool and deadpan you understand) and they were completely professional about it.

They are most certainly not legally obliged.

I would be very careful with the O2 filter - when it was first applied to contract customers they leaked all the credit card details used to take the filter down, sent the details over plan text and then have lied about it ever since.

Do not trust them with your card details. Go into a store - there are plenty of legitimate sites if you are concerned that are blocked and would be accepted without complaint, such as the lottery pages...

@mesmerone - Interesting to know about O2's foul ups. Always amazes me how incompetent huge companies can be about some things.

Have you got more information on the legal issue (other than saying it's just not one)? What are the motivations for mobile operators to filter like this?

Tell me that this isn't YOU.

I had a similar problem with 3 on my old Nokia but they lifted the 18 restriction with out any problems and I didn't have to pay. I am still with 3 but with a different phone and have been able to access both IC and Fetlife without having to ask.

You sound like "Jack Reacher" from the novels by Lee Child. ;-)

I have a feeling this will be across the board on internet suppliers in a few years. and a part of me is in agreement with why they are doing it, As long as its a simple private way to open up the sites again for those above 18 wanting adult sites.

I'm on orange and it doesn't appear to block anything.

It certainly does on my Orange pay-as-you-go SIM-only deal.

All Pay as you go accounts have Orange Safeguard. Pay monthly customers don't, as they've been through a credit reference check so should be over 18.

If you're a pay as you go customer:
  • Once you have verified with customer services that you are over 18 you will be able to manage your safeguard settings via Your Account. Once you're logged in select 'change your details' then select 'change your adult content filter settings'.
  • Call 450 from your Orange phone, or 07973 100 450 from any other phone (call charges may vary).

Or you can pop in to your local Orange shop (it can only be an Orange Retail store, other phone shops can't change it for you) with photo ID that gives details of your age (passport, photo driving licence, EU & Swiss National Card, Citizen Card) and one of our Phone Trainers will remove the service from your account.

No so bloody simple with Orange. Look on their site and it says it's "straightforward" to remove "Orange Safegard" by calling 150 from the handset.

So yours truly called 150, got swamped in an endless succession of menu options, eventually got through to an operator who sounded as if he hadn't a clue what he was doing, the operator then put me on hold (listenning to god awful, tinny "musak") while he called a supervisor ... and then, at last, I was told Orange Safeguard was gone. Yet to see if it actually is - but sure as heck no easy process!

*UPDATE* Model(s) for "how to" bondage photographs (and other bondage photographs) have now been found. Thank you to all who showed interest.
