fetlife also appears to use tracking cookies, its nice to see that IC doesn't AFAICT.

I just checked in Chrome - fetlife.com has 12 cookies set and informedconsent.co.uk has 8.

We aren't talking about cookies that are used to manage your session. Thou having said that I havn't examined all the details of what IC does with its 8 cookies. Perhaps @Admin can comment.

If you delete the cookies from your browser and start from scratch you should find 6 from IC, one of which is used to record whether we've shown you the page telling non-adults to go away, and 5 of which are part of keeping you signed in. There was some hacking around to get it to work in some broken browsers (*cough* Nokia's *cough*) and so some redundancy in which cookie contains what.

We did use Google Analytics and had their cookies for a while too, but we dropped it partly due to the privacy implications, as it allows Google to tie together your use of different websites. ie it embeds some Google stuff in pages using those _utma cookies you see on the list of cookies from FetLife etc etc that still participate in it.

In our opinion, what Facebook is clearly doing is downright evil, and part of the reason we disabled the IC presence there. (That and the continual harrassment we had from them and the effort to keep getting IC unblocked.)

If anyone's worried about all the tracking and security issues, mixing vanilla world with all your private fun and games - use a separate computer.

If you're really paranoid and want even more security, separating out facebook kink from randy kink, etc., and you have the technical resources, then use virtual machines on your separate computer, one virtual PC per kink.

Most people use a NAT box....

FB great idea but some things are best kept a secret and it seems a v simple way of getting into some very sticky situations,

I can't really imagine most people on here having the competence to mask their net addresses and activities in that fashion. Keeping the tracking cookies under control on your PC(s) appears a simpler method for situations like Facebook.

Unless you're talking about specialist privacy masking services to route all your network activities?

No - I meant most people have a NAT box by default anyway. That means using separate computers and VM's doesn't mask your network usage pattern, as its all attributable to the singular IP address your ISP gives you.

Using Tor or an anon. proxy server is a better bet.

The whole issue of FB or Google tracking you is very serious, and as Bohnanza pointed out, it is their game to do so and they rely on your 'friends' who may not care so much what links they provide (even if they understand them).

My own approach, which is not foolproof but reasonable, is to use one web browser (Chromium, the less creepy version of Chrome) for FB and my Google email account, and NOTHING ELSE. No searches.

I use another web browser, Opera, with it set to delete cookies on exit for everything else (and some searches). Even that is not quite enough, as for better non-tracking it should delete ALL history (including cached stuff) on exit.

Most decent web browsers support privacy enhancing features, but Chrome is not very good (it deletes things on exit, but appears to let a new tab see what is already there). Also Chrome reports too much to Google for a start.

Firefox is good due to some add-ons such as Adblock and BetterPrivacy (deleted flash "longterm storage objects"), as well as supporting private browsing. There is also a plugin to allow searches via Scroogle using a secure https link, which anonymises your search to a large degree.

Even with cookies set to be cleared, there is a lot of stuff that makes tracking still possible, but one has to balance practicality against paranoia.

Don't use the same email for work and play. Get a few different non-obvious web mail accounts and use them.

Don't log in to work & play sites at the same time / same browser.

Don't (and this should be bloody obvious) use a work computer (even a work laptop at home) for play access. Ever.

Remember your search history will be kept and analysed, so having cookies deleted each time you (regularly) exit your browser is a GOOD THING. If 'friends' on FB are straddling that work-play zone, remove them. In fact, avoid FB altogether or keep it to the very minimum you must do.

You can always be tracked somehow, but make it hard for the bastards...

Bollocks spoken like an real expert.

Having IC be such a relatively well-walled garden is part of why I stick with IC. As for Facebook, it's that thing, y'know? If they're not trying to sell you a product, then *you* are the product they're trying to sell.

I have a FB account, but have barely used it despite mounting pressure to the contrary. Such a grinchy initiative seems to be making more and more sense with each passing day.
