Talk to others, goto workshops, read up on it, watch vids.

Then have a go, and keep practising :-D

Thats easier said than done if you have a partner. If you haven't you've wasted time , money, and sheer effort in travelling to venues, or in some cases like learning rope or needles a great deal of personal trauma to go to the workshop and try and learn .. for the first one its something you can't do on your own unless you have a mannequin and a mannequin can't tell you your tying the rope too tightly can it !

Why not? What is this aversion that people have to paying to learn stuff from good educators?

How do tops on here go about learning new skills and types of play that they haven't done before?

In a work environment I might 'shadow' someone if I wanted to learn or emulate some of their skills, see what they do and they to do that myself.

Or with BDSM should it be a more organic thing, trying to find out your own style instead or imitating someone else.

I must add that I'm very concerned about safety. However, when doing some BDSM activities for the first time, the lack of experience is surely an added risk. So how do we go about minimising that and maximising the learning and growth. Oh and the fun! :-)

I have had Dommes who are inexperienced in certain fields of the lifestyle, 'shadow' me and then practice on a one to one basis on my slave while under my guidance.

Most of what I would suggest has already been suggested, but I will add that I learned to flog by being flogged by a sub who has many years of practice and is very good at it themselves. Once I knew how it felt he then went on to teach me how to do it to him and gave feedback on my performance and helped me improve.

I understand that. No one wants to feel ripped off. But you can learn things from an experienced dominant, and I see no problem with paying to do so. Hell, you might even value a little more that which you have to pay for. Those who charge for services wouldn't last long if clients felt they were being ripped off.

Seconded.

Go to demos/workshops you can learn so much, many of those who give the demos/workshops also work professionally and can give excellent one to one tuition and follow up lesson to the basics you learnt there.

I have been hired by many inexperienced dominants to teach them how to use implements etc and to give them advice and feedback whilst using them and experienced of playing before they venture out into the big wide world of playing in clubs and answering personals.

I've vouched for clients afterwards for club invites and for personal ads to say they are safe sane players.

I also work with pro dom/dommes as a demo bunny for those wanting tuition, it's very enjoyable and satisfying seeing people playing confidently after you've taught them something new.

We were all newbies once.

sorry sorry could'nt resist that last bit,,

Yes, but you get a certificate!!

But seriously. Learning from more experienced people at clubs/munches/etc. is great, and in my local area at least I know we have a lot of knowledge and a lot of people who are very generous to newbies with their time.

But at the end of the day, if you want dedicated 1-on-1 tuition for a length of time on something specific, then I think it is worth compensating your tutor in some way.

I have frequently put myself on the receiving end in trhe past in order to learn.

When I want your opinion, I'll thrash it out of you.
