Had you deleted the files from the C drive and only left it the option of the D drive before installing your new shiny iTunes, that wouldn't have been a problem. They make it as easy as possible for the average user. The average user keeps their files on their C drive and doesn't bother with partitions or external devices as that's all far too scary. As a result, iTunes will go looking for the music in the most obvious place and install it so as not to confuse the poor user who won't know where it's been saved. Heck, I know computer users who don't even have sub folders in their documents folder! For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Go to Edit - Preferences - Advanced. You'll see the 2 tick boxes that screw everything up. Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised. (Which means it will stick music wherever it wants rather than keep it organised in a normal way, i.e. keep all albums by an artist together.) Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library. (Which means everything is going on the C drive whether you want it to or not). Turn them off and you actually gain some control over the program. Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?

Perhaps so. I thought I did that the second time around but it/they still foiled my plan, somehow, the bastard/s.
I am an average user, at best, However, I am cognisant of options when presented with them. If I am offered the choice of leaving it all to The All-Knowing Apple bods to do what they will or perhapsto engage a plan of my own then should it happen to be written in plain English, I may just grasp this and make an informed decision. The key point here, is in plain, unambiguous, simple, clear language; in my case, English. I am not a fan of playing Jeopardy or any kind of risk based decision making game with my computer. Do you remember those fantasy role-playing game books where you chose which page to turn to and then pretended that you hadn't really turned to that page because the witch beat you with some nasty unforseen spell ? Again, I've laboured the point a little but that is how these instructions read to me and there may in some circumstances be no pretending about what you decided and going back to the previous page. In this analogy, it would be like having to go to the shop and seeing if you can buy the book again hoping they have it in stock. However, it is 9pm and you have to wait until tomorrow evening after work to get to the bookshop, presuming you don't have to work late or get snarled in some sort of transport debacle while commuting or driving.
This used to be me, I evolved. Yay, Go Me ! If this is indeed the average user you speak of, then that makes me an above average user. If so then we have a very low threshold of knowledge as users, as a whole. If I am above average in this model, then I think that is a very scary proposition ! As you can see, I am not a fan of computers in general and their esoteric software idiosyncracies. If I could keep all my music in a book instead then I am sure it would be much simpler I would be much happier. On that particular matter I don't know how that would work and I may have just said something stupid . . . but the only proper way to end any decent rant is with a flippant comment, or maybe that's just me ! Well, I think the long and short of it, aside from any ranting I may or may not choose to do, is at least I have another place to store all of my music and for the moment, that may just do. Until I am feeling energised enought to do battle with Apple again I ( I mean my friend of course ) will just remove the partition and take it from there until the C drive becomes full up again . . . !
