my daughter has to do an art project for college, taking something old like traditional fairy tales and stories and putting a modern twist too it. Does any icers have any fab ideas, the darker the better? Would love to hear some. Thanks.xxx

Has she read Roald Dahl's "Revolting Rhymes" or any of his other stories? He puts delicious dark twists to fairy tales.

Depending on how old your daughter is you might like to get her to take a look at Angela Carter's 'The Bloody Chamber' as well. It's a collection of short stories which are all rewritten fairytales - very dark, but quite fun in places too. In the end, nothing you do matters. All that matters is what you do. |

It might also be worthwhile to research some of the popular fairytales' socially subversive origins. You find a lot of the stories are very dark (and often sexually inappropriate) before the Victorians got a hold of them. Red Riding Hood and the wolf spring to mind... Another darkish modern take on that one for inspiration.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3GJmkUZlyo&featu... There are no stupid questions. Just a lot of inquisitive idiots. |
