I know with me it can be a lack of confidence. I have been told to "just ask" someone I like how they feel about me. That is terrifying, and as they haven't said anything definite to me, I assume they only see me as a friend. Maybe if I asked, I'd find out differently - but my lack of confidence makes me assume.

And before anyone tries it - no, I'm not going to ask them!!!

I can relate to that when it comes to starting a relationship, which is annoying as I'm generally quite a confidant type.

Fear of rejection is (I think) the main issue, as it's horrible, but living with the regret of losing an opportunity/not knowing isn't great either.

Put me on a pedestal, but be there to catch me if I fall.

Your absolutely right. I think you would, before too long, possibly put the rejection behind you as horrid as it is but the lost opportunity/not knowing would nibble away far longer.
