In this present world (which contains starving people, displaced people, trafficked people, un-consenting slaves, survivors of physical abuse, homeless people and just generally poor, ground-down what's-it-in-for-me people) you have all kinds of rights, most of them fought for by others. Forgive me, but the right to feel hacked off because someone uses the work 'trannie' (of someone he admires and fancies) is not high on the list.

In my experience, most of the people who are happy both to describe themselves, and be described by others, as "trannies" are transvestites. Who sometimes call what they do "cross-dressing".

The transgender folk i know are much more likely to identify as "trans women" or "trans men", or "genderqueer".

There are lots of people who find "tranny" offensive, due to the way it's used by transphobic people to abuse and oppress their targets...

perhaps we should all be more thoughtful about the words we use when we post on a public forum like this. If someone says that they feel disrespected or offended by our language, then maybe we should shut up for a minute and reflect on why that is, rather than retorting that they're in a minority of one (and therefore their feelings as an individual trans person can be ignored?)

As a cis woman myself, I avoid using the word "tranny" to describe anyone who doesn't use that word about themselves. And if I want to generalise about that whole spectrum of people who don't fall neatly into the gender binary system I find "trans" a better umberella term to use.

I concur. A thoughtful and comprehensive comment.

I'll do anything for a lollipop...

I am a tranny, I don't find it offensive at all, I find it a term that is sifter than transvestite that sounds more like a medical condition. I'm a tranny, it's a gift, and I am proud to be a tranny.

Why do you find it offensive, I see why it is?

I think the best you may get out of this is an agreement that people here won't refer to you in a way you find offensive, at least to your face. Winning a semantic debate is almost impossible on a place like IC.

A couple of years ago, there was a quite vitriolic debate on here about using the term 'epileptic' as a word to describe me and my fellow sufferers from epilepsy.

It seemed some with epilepsy do not mind being termed 'epileptics', although I do, as I am not a one dimensional product of a medical condition. At least it drew attention to the casual way we use words.

You will never get everyone to see your point of view or even acknowledge their use of certain words might discomfort others.

Given that, I have realised there are other, perhaps more important battles to win.

The PC brigade also tell those of us on the Spectrum that we can't call ourselves autistics, as the term's offensive, and those of us with severe, often debilitating conditions that we have to say we're disabled, because any claim we're merely handicapped is being offensive to, um, us. Whenever things like this crop up, I tend to just keep my head down, though, since, for all I've no problem with either autistic or handicapped and hate the PC versions, it's easier to let them stay on their high-horses.

I'm not saying that "Tranny" falls into that bracket, but that there will always be those who sit on both sides.
