When a person has an urge to become an upstanding citizen that is charged with the wellbeing of this country, they have very good intentions of getting this country out of debt, reducing crime and getting people a better standard of living amongst other things.

At what point do they chuck all that in and grab as much money from the country as possible?

Is it after 1 day, week, month, year or their first term as an M.P.?

Bet they all would avoid that question. =-o

Perhaps when they realise from maybe the local government route to move onto bigger and better things.

I'd wager the majority don't do it to be an upstanding citizen and are just in it for the money.

But the majority of MPs don't make vast amounts of money compared to other jobs they could get

I think a bigger motivation is the prospect of having power and being able to influence and change things. For some, money happens along the way, but not for all.

Yeah but the difference is they actually have to turn up for any of those - £65,738 plus second home plus moat cleaning isn't bad for a job that doesn't actually require you to do anything in order to get paid. In any case, the vast majority of the Westminster trough guzzling gravy train freeriders already have at least one other job, some more than one.

If it leaks, plug it...

Wow! Didn't realise it was such a doddle. Sending my application in as we speak. Might actually put a little effort in and answer a few tricky questions from pesky constituants. Seriously, someone does have to do the job and if they don't get it right perhaps those of us who critise should show them how it should be done.

Other jobs they could get?? I think you are forgetting you need absolutely no qualifications to be an MP, other than the ability as an ordinary party member to sit late into the evenings in interminably boring meetings in order to get selected.

As soon as they realise that everybody else is doing it, or maybe thats why they get into politics.
