...I think it is. What does it mean exactly? And why is it ok to belittle someone for it?

It is, and it isn't okay to belittle people for it. Luckilyit seems to be on the wane, as quite a few people have realised the same thing. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

Classist? Maybe Racist? Of course not - Chav makes no reference to one's ethnicity Prejudiced? Yes. But then much the same could be said when making derrogatory comments about goths, emos, Toffs (aka Hooray Henrys), YUPPYs and DINKYs. I thought maybe it could be thought of a racist as it is usually used to describe white working class people. I'll do anything for a lollipop...

In this area it's not that at all. It is used to describe louts with no manners, often criminal money funded, lots of offspring who gather asbo's and who just happen to dress (often smartly) in branded clothing with a lot of "Bling". So Classist yes, but not legitimate working class for this Borough. lily

The word itself has many origins. There is said to be romany word from which it came from. Some groups of northern folk lay claim to it and so on. At one point it thought to be shorthand for council house and violent. The word 's origins have been lost in the mist of time. Certainly its not racist or classist. http://empressm7.uboot.com/ http://www.socialkink.com/empressmartine Vampire, pro/lifestyle ts dom/switch.Ageplay mummy/aunty/AB,medical play, domestic, energy, outdoor specialist."Awsome! I think chav actually could be considered racist because it's a given that nobody would ever use it for anybody other than another white person. Thing with race is that it is a social construct. There's no such thing as race in nature. There's genetic diversity, and sure this can manifest itself in some pretty obvious ways like skin or hair colour, but one human being is pretty much the same as the next. Simply being the same colour as somebody doesn't mean therefore that you can't be racist towards them. If I was to say, for instance, the Irish are a bunch of thick drunk feckers, that'd be racist, despite the fact that there's nothing physiologically to differentiate me from an Irishman. Or a Polish person, or a Russian person, or an American or whatever. Ergo if we consider chavs to be a subculture, then that's pretty much the same as considering them to be a race, and therefore while it might not technically be racism to describe people as chavs, it's near as damnit. It depends on the definition to an extent, because to some people a chav is a specific kind of member of the underclass, such as a Chelsea fan or a member of the EDL, but some just use the term generally as a term of abuse for the unemployable, which is a bit shitty really. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

Does anyone really care? They've made their own bed... Is it any more derogatory than any of the other divisions in this country. Scousers, Geordies, Taffs, Cockneys? Any or all of which can be used positively or negatively. Owner of The Croppery Dungeon and Breakfast. Organises The St Leonards munch.

Prejudice about someone's nationality is not technically racism - it is called xenophobia. Racism may be a man-made concept, to parahrase your comment, but it would be more accurate to use prejudice towards someone's ethnicity than their nationality as a definition of racism. Prejudice towards a person due to their social class is not implicitly mean as a slur on their ethnicity: take the subtle difference between the expressions "trailer trash" vs "white trash". Are you trying to tell me that it is not physically possible to be in the same social status as what might be classified as a chav if of say Asian or African origin, or heaven forbid you might be of mixed race. Now who's making assumptions and displaying prejudice of a racist nature? Hmmm? My point is, prejudice is prejudice, and the malintent that comes with prejudice is dangerous. But let's not use the wrong terminology if we're going to get anally retentive about it, eh? That would not be a good idea.
