Dictionary: a state of being bound usually by compulsion (as of law or mastery): b : servitude or subjugation to a controlling person or force
When people have used the word 'Bondage' in the scene, I suppose I have always thought of tying people up with rope or leather restrains. Although we do play with bondage of this sort [got some rope, but mainly leather cuffs and stuff].
But I haven't really thought very much about using the word in terms of the Dom/Sub relationships. The Submissive being in bondage to the DOM. Perhaps it is this sense of the word that caused it to be used in the 'BDSM' acronym rather than ropework and bondage as any activity.
I think I rather like this word and will use it more! For one thing, Bondage as a word also features quite a lot in the Christian spiritual tradition, normally as a negative thing, which makes the whole thing seem rather naughty and exciting! But there is of course a big contrast. In the bible, the promise of freedom from bondage, is about God setting people free from things such as captivity in another country, from spiritual powers, from ourselves.
The wonderful thing about the slave in BDSM is that it is consentual. The reason my Slave's submission to me is a gift, and a much treasured one at that - is because she wants to give that control to me. She wants to show me her love in that way. She in turn finds her fulfillment and joy through the experiance and it strengthens our relationship. I give her the gift of my dominance, not to cause her pain, or merly to exercise power or stroke my ego, but for our mutual pleasure.
Long live bondage!
