on open common land? Can a person just go and do it somewhere? It seems that even if it is not illegal in case one accidently shoots a dog-walker, it would get paint on the landscape. I'm not sure if the airsoft rules apply, as airsoft are proper guns (some of them!) I know google is my friend, but I hate google as you come up with 18 million hits, most of which are directories trying to sell common land (probably) and i seem to lose a large portion of my life looking for things there. Ta in advance! ETA: The OP has been answered and the link to the statute posted for accuracy (Thank you Roly).
No civilians have been or will be shot as a result of this random question.

If you accidently hit someone, they could probably get you arrested for assault with a weapon, those paint ball cases are pretty hard when they hit and definately leave bruises on skin....they would probably cause serious physical harm if you hit someone in the face too. Private land is probably best, I'm sure the police and general public would appreciate you not waving any gun like objects about in a public place wether they fire or not. - Master of posting at the bottom of a page -

Thank you. It is, indeed, illegal, to have any kind of firearm, even a paintball gun in a public place. (I wasn't thinking so much about really populated places where people would really get hit - I was being facetious. LOL But it wouldn't be an idea to take the risk of getting arrested even if one thought it was totally unpopulated.) @Play_Space - Next party is Friday, September 23 from 930 - 3 am. And even then... I knew some people a few years ago who had armed police turn up at their house because they were playing paintball/airsoft/similar gun game and someone saw it and reported "a group of masked men with guns" to the police...

Just for the record paintball guns and airsoft guns are not in fact firearms at all. However if a member of the public believes you have a firearm the police have no choice but to respond with the assumption you are waving a real gun around. That includes the helicopter, firearms officers, surrounding the area and a whole load of paper work even if it tuns out to be a rolled up newspaper or a banana in your pocket. It is what the public believe is going on rather than what is real. Airsoft and paintball games are held in fenced off private areas and entrances and exits must be signed to tell the public what is going on. Simply carrying a realistic airsoft gun to your car without being bagged is starting to be risky! I think the whole thing is silly and stupid and the UK public have turned completely soft, gun paranoid, insane and running scared. But then I have been in environments where machine guns are openly carried by all without any feelings of personal threat from the same people. The pleasure, I fear, will be all mine.

I do have tickets to the local paintball courses for a day's shooting....It just doesn't have the same appeal when they have clothes on. LOL
Would you like to come, MW? I'm going to be on the the SSS trip during the hunt and am gutted.
To the others, I hardly think that a middle aged woman would set off any alarm bells - more likely people would think it was me playing commando with the grandkids than being real.

The link that I provided to the UK paintball Sport federation clearly states that most paintball guns are not classified as firearms ( because the projectile breaks up on impact, rather than penetrates ). However if people carry them in public places, the law which they will fall foul of is the Anti Social Behaviour Act of 2003, which prohibits people from having with them without reasonable excuse any air weapon ( whether loaded or not ) or any imitation weapon. The bottom line is that you are liable to be arrested if you carry a paintball gun on public land and that is what Ama was asking about. |
