Don't mess with Max Mosley (54)

It clearly doesn't pay to mess with Max Mosley. One by one, all the media men - for they are all men - with prime roles in invading his privacy are coming unstuck. Gratifyingly, what goes around does indeed come around.

The dog days of August were a quiet time to round up what was happening to the perps - Thurlbeck, Myler, Crone, Dacre and Rupert himself.

Neville Thurlbeck, the journo who wired up Woman E before double crossing her, was arrested back in April and attracted further opprobrium in July as a registered informant for the Met and the security services. At which point the Independent profiled him as "a journalist for whom no story is too sleazy" and "a brothel creeper par excellence".

It was Thurlbeck who signed the contract paying Mulcaire £100k a year, and his prints will be all over various dodgy activities, like obtaining information from the police - he has been on trial for this offence before.

Thurlbeck and the News of the World's publishers, News Group Newspapers, face criminal charges before the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris in September over the Mosley story.

Editor Colin Myler, who insisted after the verdict "taking part in depraved and brutal S&M orgies on a regular basis does not in our opinion constitute fit and proper behaviour", lost his job when Murdoch tanked the Screws.

Tom Crone was the lawyer who cleared articles for publication, renown for finding ways of getting stories into the NotW, rather than keeping them out; skilled at estimating the likely legal damages. He once described the process as hand-to-hand combat with a high risk of casualties. Now he's one of them and also out of a job.

Dacre wasn't directly involved in the original story, but as chair of what is laughingly called the editor's code of practice committee, as adopted by the PCC, he jumped in with a vengence.

"Unimaginable sexual depravity" he harrumphed about BDSM, "perverted, depraved, the very abrogation of civilised behaviour" and for good measure slagged off Mr Justice Eady's "arrogant and amoral" judgment.

It is a pity the ECHR case isn't being heard now, as in the current climate they might have placed less reliance on the effectiveness of the PCC.

Luckily for Dacre, Mulcaire was signed exclusively to NotW so Associated Press couldn't use him, but the Data Protection chief had shown they were the major user of another investigator whose files are now in the hand of the reinvigorated police investigation. In due course that should bring the fire closer to Dacre.

As for Murdoch, he must be getting senile. Thurlbeck threatened some of the Mosley girls with exposure if they did not cooperate, but in court denied this was blackmail. Murdoch said the story was "outstanding journalism written by great journalists" so one might have thought would remember who wrote it - especially as both Mosley and Tom Watson MP wrote to ask him what he proposed to do about the accusation of blackmail against Thurlbeck.

But by July Murdoch could blithely tell Parliament "I've never heard of him". Sad, isn't it.

In next couple of weeks Mulcaire has to reveal who at the Screws gave him his instructions. That could be fun.

Revenge is indeed sweet.

[Incidentally this thread invokes the AUP on topic clause, so if you want to discuss political beliefs of over half a century ago, please do so elsewhere; this is about privacy and press morals, or lack of. And schadenfreude]

"Max Mosley, who won a privacy case against the News of the World after it exposed his sadomasochistic sex life, has been bankrolling a number of phone hacking cases against the newspaper in the civil courts."

"It's true to say that Max has been funding a number of cases. Wealthy celebrities have not needed his assistance but there are a number of cases where the claimants do not have much money and could face losing a lot if News International were somehow to win some of those."

What goes around comes around, as some of the twats at NewsCorp/NoTW are finding out. (Shame for the folks at NoTW who have also suffered but weren't involved, but if you sleep with the devil, you shouldn't be too surprised about being 'tainted by association').

Had read and heard before about Mosley bankrolling others who are fighting court cases against the likes of NoTW (see @Tanos ' link) and have to say that is really good & commendable, talk about putting your money where your mouth is.

I suspect I wouldn't like Mosley much as a person, but the invasion of privacy into his private life he endured was horrific and I definitely support his fight on that front.

There's a somebody I'm longing to see, I hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me
