Shooting from the hip and not having a copy of the book to hand, so being fully prepared to be shot down, I don't believe there was a hyphen in the original version of Doubleplusungood, which was all one word. Sorry! | ||

I'm pretty sure you're right about the hyphen. A hyphen seems far too bourgeios and decadent for Ingsoc. I reckon it was two words though, if my Swiss cheese memory serves. | ||

And while we are at it... advise / advice practise / practice [*Ahem*] The verb (doing word) has the "S" and the noun (naming word) has the "C".... Oh God, I love you. I don't even go there as it's so frequent. I charitably assume it's a typo mostly, to keep myself sane. Of course, for every one of us there are 2, if not 5, who read these replies and think we are all tossers. I don't care. It has given me such simple pleasure to read these replies.
