| The term snapshot aesthetic refers to a trend within fine art photography in the USA from around 1963. The style typically features apparently banal everyday subject matter and off-centered framing. Subject matter is often presented without apparent link from image-to-image and relying instead on juxtaposition and disjunction between individual photographs. Notable practitioners include Garry Winogrand, Nan Goldin, Wolfgang Tillmans, Martin Parr, William Eggleston, and Terry Richardson. In recent years young contemporary photographers, such as Hiromix, Ryan McGinley, Miko Lim, and Arnis Balcus have gained international recognition thanks to the snapshot aesthetic. From the early nineties the style became the predominant mode in fashion photography, especially within youth fashion magazines such as The Face - photography from this era is often associated with the so-called 'heroin chic' look (a look often seen as having been influenced particularly by Nan Goldin). |
I'm interested in exploring fetish imagery that exploits the snapshot aesthetic. Now of course, not every snapshot of a fetish scene is an art image, but does anyone have any links to fetish photographers who shoot in this kind of style?
Further to this question, how do people feel about "the snapshot aesthetic", especially within fetish imagery? It is often derided in mainstream photography as not being "good" or "skilful", but I often see the argument from fetishists that they almost prefer casual snapshots over more formal images.

Terry Richardson did do some fetish But I think some of China Hamilton's work could be considered to be (but many look a bit too well set up). I have heard Snapshot described as moving an image from fantasy to reality, most fetish photography is fantasy so perhaps any image that moves it to looking real could be considered to have elements of snapshot aesthetic.
Some of my own favourite shots are based on the idea, set up then deconstructed so while it's aiming at the aesthetic its not a snapshot, it just looks like one
Where as this is just fantasy with no reference to reality

I have seen snapshots on IC that are more erotic to me than carefully lit and well crafted studio images. It is not the snapshot style that has made these photos erotic rather that the photographer has managed to capture something absent from the majority of studio shots.

A good post .. and an interesting question. I have always thought that photography, by its very nature is an act of voyeurism and I wonder at what point does a "snapshot" cease to be just that and becomes more of a documentary record ? For example, if you shoot a scene or aspects thereof, in a snapshot style, how would this then differ from being just 'gonzo' porn ? I think the snapshot aesthetic, by its very nature of capturing the unstaged, is at odds with fetish photography (or at least what is commonly accepted as a fetish image). By this I mean low key lighting, black leather, shiny chrome and a well constructed torso, which can all be somewhat cliche' – which is what I would regard as more erotic than fetish. My interpretation of the word fetish is that someone chooses to specifically focus on the detail and minutia that help dress or lead up to a specific event. So I'm not sure if it would be possible to capture players in a scene or a model from a 'photographers' perspective and not have it look like a construct ? Since much of the work of the snapshot aesthetic photographers is closely cropped and shot from a viewpoint so you almost feel part of the shot itself perhaps a better approach would be to shoot from a perspective within a scene ? For example, shoot from the position of a Dominant or a Sub and not a third party observer. Not sure if this answers your question, more my thoughts really.

Gonzo porn is when the photographer is fucking the subject. You don't have to be fucking the subject to take a picture that could be called a snapshot!

I agree, I was just trying to explore the idea and what the outcome might be.
