I have a part time job and have just finished University, so now will pay council tax again. My earnings don't cover my bills, rent, food etc etc. So I applied for help, housing benefit and council tax while I look for a full time job and I was turned down.
After working and paying tax for 32 years, I get nothing from a system I've paid more than my fair share into. I have OCD which is severe but I've never used that to get benefits. I see others getting benefits who play the system, lie and grab all they can and get it.
It's the first time I've asked for help and I know of other friends who have worked all their adult lives who have also had similar experiences. So while others feed off me like leaches and could work, I'm bled dry and am in financial difficulty. I will get a job eventually but I got played and it really has pissed me off..

Welcome to the crap world of the benefit system. I have been honest about living condtions ie with partner etc, but without going into too much detail because i have told them anything they wont help with any benefits that actually make a difference. I have been in tears on many occaisions through worrying about bills etc but unless you are an illegal immigrant and/or pregnant or lie through your teeth you dont get anything !!!! I am sorry to hear of your hassle and i hope you get all the help you deserve. xxxx And sorry if i sound bitter but i am...i am fed up with being screwed for being honest.

Don't let the bastards grind you down!! *She who rides the Demon is afraid to dismount* ~* A hopeless dreamer she said, eyes of cloud and feet of lead *~

I know, I just want a little help while I get a job. I have a friend who was getting more from benefits than I was earning and I had a decent wage. She had child tax credits, housing benefit and other help that I wouldn't even know about asking for. Another friend and I were exhausted from working and yet we took home less than she was getting. Her mother also helped tax and insure her car and that's on top of buying the car for her in the first place and she was 48, not a youngster. Trouble is for many being on benefits makes them lazy and any sniff of hard work and they crumble, go sick or complain they're tired, boo hoo.. ^^^^This, although I think there's a gap between the minimum hours you need to work to claim tax credits and the maximum you can work to claim income support. There certainly used to be, so unless they've sorted that out or you work more than 16 hours (I think that's what the threshold used to be for WTC) I woulnd't hold your breath for that either

You have to be working a minimum of 16 hours a week to claim working tax credits, i think the cut off point is 30 or above

Sux Shamonu, sorry!
As far as I know, you can claim WTC as long as you work over 16 hours a week, no maximum hour threshold. The govt have changed the earnings thresholds however, but if you are working more than 16 hours; but not full time, that shouldn't be a prob...unless you earning £150 per hour of course! There is an excellent calculator on directgov.uk which asks all the questions about what you work, earn, own etc; then calculates exactly what you can claim. This is also a great site, with loads of links: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/ Good luck, hope you get sorted soon. x "I put my brave face on...so they won't know that I'm dead."

A woman i work with claims working tax credits, she is single with no children & works less than 30 hours...if you're disabled it's a totally different benefit.
