Tommorow I am driving my HUGE Mercedes sprinter van 5 miles to get its M.O.T.Im really scared, its so much bigger than anything ive driven before and it bears a huge gash down one side from the first time Trogg drove it...2 minutes and he had hit a bollard when turning!A couple of friends have sat with me as I've driven it and theysay I'm fine but the nerves are really bad. However we need to go away in august and I have got to be confident by then.I think my current state of anxiety is feeding greatly into how Im feeling bout this...after all LOADS of folk drive vans...Im thinking I need to calm down...HELLLLPPPP!On a much cheerier note im going to London today to pick up my new leather coat!Cant wait. Its lush....

Don't worry, once you get used to it, it is no more difficult than driving a small car. Your brain will adjust to the different scale of things. In many ways, it's easier because the wing mirrors are much larger than the ones on a car and give you a much better view. You do need to plan ahead slightly more, for instance when turning into a junction on a narrow road where you need to cut the corner. Just make sure there's nobody parked in the way! I should know - I used to drive articulated lorries. Did squash a few things before I completely got the hang of it mind... they're a bugger to reverse. But a lot of fun! The main thing is to get practice, then the confidence will come as your skill improves. You may never be the best white van woman in the world, but you'll definitely get a lot better.

Maybe try taking it out for a drive around tonight when the roads are not as busy until you get use to it. I recently had to drive a transit up to Cheltenham from Exeter on my own and that scared the crap out of me until I got going and by the time I got to Taunton I had forgotten all my fears and was enjoying myself! The supreme irony of life is that hardly anyone gets out of it alive

you'll be fine, its just like a big car. just remember to give yourself more room on corners. Use the road, don't be scared to take up more room. And just mind your mirrors for folk sneaking up either side of you.
L x ETA :
PS oh, and low bridges, know your height, and mind the low bridges

I drive a long wheel base high top van. Driving isn't much different its parking and reversing. If you can take someone along then get them to get out and assist you if in doubt park somewhere with lots of space. Practise makes perfect so maybe find an industrial estate and every now and then practise.
Most drivers are weary around vans so just barge your way through works for me "I dont dream about an easy life. I dream of living long enough in a hard one".

You'll be grand in no time at all. It just takes a little time to get into the habit of checking the wing mirrors rather than the -non existant- rear view mirror, especially when turning left. "Me and Kevin, we're just not the same"
