To whomever it was that used to post interesting things on this site about the inherent conservatism that lies at the heart of sexual perversion:
You're right.

Is position this derived from research? If so, is there a link to it? Rohypnol means never having to say "Would you like another coffee?".

What on earth do you mean? Some kind of quantitative study of rats or similar? When I say someone's "right", all I really mean is that my position has shifted and that I now understand their logic and surmise it to be, well, logical. ETA: this doesn't mean I'm now a Tory. I don't know about all sexual perversion but it is surely true of BDSM. As you point out, it is not neccessary to be a Tory to be conservative. You can also be a left/liberal and a perv. BDSM: Boring, Dumb, Sad, Motherfuckers.

As I said, it has nothing to do with party political persuasion. In fact, I'd argue that the private realm of the erotic and the public idea of sexual citizenship have -- or at least should have -- very little to do with one another. I suppose the point is that transgression/perversion can't function without limits. In order to disavow a social order (like de Sade or Bataille), the social order has to, rigorously, exist in the first place, and remain in place in order that transgression is, well, 'transgressive'. Therefore, Sade was basically a social conservative. He had to, in some way, believe in God (or at least have SOME respect for the social structure that allowed for the primacy of God) in order to disavow God. Also, BDSM reproduces (although some say "simulates") socially repressive narratives all the time. Those narratives have to be in some way adhered to or given credence in order to be re-figured and re-enacted 'transgressively'.
If that makes sense. And yes, I lean to the left and always will, though I'm not a liberal in any traditional sense. I'm the unsightly hairy armpit of IC.

All this assumes we all feel bdsm is transgressive and not, in fact, quite natural. |
