My degree is FINALLY done. No more. The end.
It's an odd thing, finishing a PhD - there doesn't seem to be a definitive finish line. You do the work, write it, submit it, defend it, correct it, have the corrections approved, get it hard bound, send copies to necessary people, and then finally get a simple letter saying that you've fulfilled all the requirements for the course and have been granted a PhD.
Yeah, you get the letter - but somehow, even after all of that process, I STILL didn't feel like it was done. Well, it's done now, goddamnit.
I went to my graduation yesterday. I dressed in the gaudiest gown of red, purple, and maroon (yes, you read right) known to mankind, got choked up watching a regal academic profession full of stuffy professors in pillow hats, walked across a stage, had the laying on of hands and the official whammy by a Vice Chancellor, and got my diploma.
And somehow, in a way I hadn't expected, it became real. It's finished. I did it. I fucking DID it. It was the best/worst/most enlightening/most horrific thing I've ever undertaken, and I came out the other end.
I had intended to go to graduation mainly as an excuse to see some friends and get a dose of pomp and circumstance; I hadn't really anticipated that the ceremony itself would hold such meaning for me. What I ended up getting was a deeper internal acknowledgement that I accomplished this massive thing that I set out to do. That I can wear an ugly gown and a pillow hat and hang out with a bunch of other stuffy professors and consider myself their equal. And that I don't ever have to suffer in that way again. 
Sorry if this weblog sounds overly boastful - it isn't intended to. I just needed to write that I've done something. I've finished something big. And I'm proud of myself.
And, for those of you who know about a certain shirt, saw it at ST recently, or will hopefully be seeing it at FXXXED UP next month, I'll be able to rightfully wear it.
