Actually, in olden times 'bread and breakfast' was offered in hostelries for the poor.
Evening bread, but no bed.
Rows of people would then sit on long benches, and a rope fastened from one end to the other, over their chests so they wouldn't fall on the floor while they slept. Hence the saying "He/she could sleep on a washing line".
A megre breakfast would be provided in the morning.

A Scottish friend of mine once told me about such a thing - apparently it was known as a 'penny lean', as that used to be the going rate for such 'accomodation'.
Can't say I've ever stayed in a 'kinky B&B', but I've certainly spent the night in a few where I felt like I'd been tortured...
