No doubt it was my stern letter to Jeremy Hunt that swung it, must have been quaking in his boots.
Although I grant you there were other, er, factors to take into account.

What happens if he closes other newspapers? Would he then be able to argue his case more effectively? I'm wondering whether he could say that his interest isn't in the written word any longer. He's closed one, why not others?? I can't help feeling that he knows what he's doing. Share prices haven't dipped either so someone must think it could be a good deal. I think that the time has long passed when Murdoch is able to exercise much control over where this is leading. It's spiralling rapidly out of control and the fallout looks likely to be massive. Until just a week or two ago he had friends in high places. Nobody now is willing to be seen associating with Murdoch. The original defence was that a rogue reporter created these problems. Today we are hearing reports that similar practices happened at the Sun and the Sunday Times in connection with snooping on Gordon Brown's children while he was Prime Minister. Rebekah Brooks was in charge at the time. This would be pretty bad, but additional questions are now being asked in America too about hacking to get details about 9/11 families. There is a further complication. The American Foreign Corrupt Practices act could mean that Murdoch's executives and relatives could face criminal charges and massive fines and News Corp assets could be seized because the FCPA act outlaws American companies from bribing foreign officials to gain business. Share prices in BSkyB and News Corporation are both tumbling http://www.google.co.uk//finance?chdnp=1&chdd=1&... Just when you think it can't possibly get any worse, along comes yet another revelation. It could be that OFCOM might one day conclude that Murdoch is not a fit and proper person to run a television network. If Sky goes, Fox in the US will look precarious too. There was a time when we thought the Berlin Wall would be there forever, or that apartheid would always be part of the south African way of life. Massive changes can happen and once they start gaining momentum, they become unstoppable. We are witnessing Murdoch's empire crumbling. Edited 11 Jul 11, 10:13 PM by KinkyRoly

If you mean his bid for BSkyB, then so far it's only been referred to the Competition Commission. So no dancing on his grave just yet, sadly.

True. I was quoting an article in the FT actually. 'Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?' - Harry M. Warner, 1927
