I find champagne really acidic, I hate it. I much prefer a Cava, or even better, a Moscato. Not huffy or stuffy, nor tiny or tall,
But fluffy, just fluffy, with no brains at all.

I am just overwhelmed that so many of you have drunk enough of it to be able to give a considered judgement. I must have been moving in the wrong circles all these years! Hard enough to find a decent bottle of white wine without breaking the bank, never mind champagnes. "Please do not call it by any name .... It is my life. I have found it out, and cannot part with it."

Christal was created Czar Alexander of Russia in 1878. One story is that he had it put in clear bottles because he liked the colour; the other version is that it was because he was afraid of being poisoned. His crest is still on the little label above the main one. Roederer make some very good other Champagnes too. When I was 18, a rather stylish friend of my dad's sent me an 18 year old bottle, with a tag that said: "This may have turned into a fancy bottle of wine vinegar. In that case, make yourself some salad dressing, and I'll send you another bottle." It was fine - I bought it a few times since. I finally jibbed when the price doubled in the 80's. Few other suggestion. If you like a dry but flavourful one, Piper Hiedseck's 'Dry Monopole' is one I like. For special occasions, Perrier Jouet's "Belle Epoque", with it's fancy enamelled bottle is nice, and looks special too. Bolinger RD is a very unique tasting special by Patsy's favourite maker, (though their other flagship stuff is a millioaire's price). I used to get a lovely old fashioned Champagne called "Salon" by Le Mesnik, however it's now gone stratospheric in price. Another under rated one was originally called 'Cremant de Cramant', now for some French politico-technical reason renamed 'Mumm de Cramant', which was touted as a kind of 'minimalist' product, originally very plainly packaged, implying that what you were paying for was the contents, and very good they were too. In these days of austerity, I'll give a vote for Jacobs Creek sparkling wines, especially the Rosé, which is lovely on summer afternoon with some strawberries. The person who's opinion we really need here is @Baron_Morgan. Mike ('The Prof')

Eeek! Owned by 'Sovereign Brands' of NYC - definitely created for Rappers, though it looks cool. The name conjures up awful thoughts of a champagne fuelled 'Motorhead', and I'm sure he's more of a JD man. I'd still go for a bottle of 'Salon', if I was in cost no object land - said to taste the same as when sarah Berhardt used to drink it. +1 on the Laurent Perrier.
