Sorry to say this one is a myth too. the rule of thumb refers to pressing your thumb on to a flat surface, and as the thumb deforms sideways its supposed to be one inch..... supposedly used by carpenters...QI again.

By the way the old one in the song "Deck of Cards" that the pips add up to 365 is wrong each suit has the same number of pips and there is an even number of suits so it cant be true.
