I am absolutely seething at a commment made a few minutes ago at a meeting. I know that the comment was from someone of an older generation with different attitudes, but really! To say that because the areas hit by the Tsunami were godless and they were full of transvestites and that it was a judgement!!!!!

GODLESS!! Nope, just think how religious the Thais are and what does wearing womens clothing have to do with religion. Aargh!

I was icily polite, "No X, you are wrong."

"Then why did it happen?"

"Because there's a fault line there." Doh!!

I couldn't let her get away with it, but there's no point arguing. You can't change entrenched attitudes like that. Let's just say that if I did believe in a god, it certainly wouldn't be hers. (I thought He was supposed to be compassionate and merciful. Hmm)

Please, please, let me not get like her in my old age, closed to new ideas and convinced that my way is the only way. Amen

Before any word leaves your mouth it must be approved by the three gatekeepers. The first will ask: "Is it true?" The second will ask: "Is it necessary?" The third will ask: "Is it kind?" Anon

Yeah, well, just think of this - that person, and millions like them, have the vote, and try to impose values upon everyone else. THAT scares me....

I don't think it is her God that is at fault... more like her being ill informed, bigoted and pompous, also not understanding her own beliefs. Sadly many people have religion, and it is just that.. a set of rules and regulations that they follow blindly without thought or consequence. I believe i daresay in the same God as she does, through faith, but that does not mean that she is speaking for God, on behalf of God or for anyone else who believes in him/it! As you say, the islands were sadly close to a faultline, i believe more could have been done if adequate warning measures were in place, this is not the work of God to provide seizmographs. There are seizmographs under the sea around faults near America i believe? if so... shouldnt there be more warning around the world, not just where the richest nations lie? Most Christians are compassionate, merciful and loving and full of genuine loving sympathy. People like the lady you refer to are devoid of compassion and logic, we are not all to be tarred with the same brush :).

dimsum is very old and very wise. He just - very gently - wants to say that bigotry is not a function of age. It is a function of fear and ignorance.

Please, gentle reader, don't fall into the trap of assuming that one's date of birth makes bigotry any more or less likely. It smacks, albeit ever so slightly - of bigotry.

Toodle pip!

Point taken- please bear in mind that I was livid at the time, and rational argument is very difficult when one is angry!

Appreciate that- please note that I wasn't implying that everyone's view of God is the same. Personally, I tend towards a Goddess, perhaps Gaia, but then my scientific side kicks in and I have severe doubts. In general I prefer to keep views about religion quiet- airing them causes enough trouble in real life, I'd rather not turn IC into a battleground!
