Yay!!! All your thoughts and good wishes must have helped because I landed a very nice job yesterday with a big company I would enjoy working for
They phoned in the morning for an interview, I went in to the interview at 3.30pm and got the call I was hired at 4.15pm (10 minutes after I left, lol!)
I start tomorrow on a 6 month interim contract then maybe an extension, but they're possibly going to outsource. So while it's not guaranteed long term, it is work and it pays very well for the fairly limited responsibility it carries.

Lots of congratulation type noises! Hope they realise what you can do and don't bother outsourcing after all. lily

Huzzah! Congratulations and best wishes. You are living the dream. Doing a job you actually enjoy is a very rare thing. Cherish it. The hand that whips is the hand of pain The hand that feeds, the hand to train No other hand could feel the same The hand of discipline, the hand of flame

I do think it's partly attitude, you can do things to make your work more enjoyable I believe. Everything has ups and downs, sometimes it's a matter of perspective.
And I've always said that if going to work every day is horrible, I'd find something else. Losing my job wasn't nice in the current climate but I haven't missed it, it was a blessing to not have to go in anymore. I miss some of my colleagues but we catch up outside of work anyway “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act” - George Orwell

Yes there are! Keep believing in yourself, stay positive, get friends and loved ones to tell you how wonderful you are. It helped me enormously. Also, relax for the interviews. Top tip from my man, which made all the difference to me: Focus on being a nice person. They are asking you to come in, so they must already think you can do the job. The main goal is to get them to like you as a person, so they think they will enjoy working with you. I was initially far too focused on showing my abilities and professionalism, thus I came across as a go getter type, a results oriented manager. But possibly also a handful. I didn't focus on showing my human side, being a normal nice person. Once I stopped focusing on what I can do and started focusing on who I am, I started having interviews that went well, and eventually got a job offer. If you're not getting interviews, just keep at it. It's a numbers game. Apply for everything and anything that suits your employment history. Don't bother with things that you know you will hate or that don't match your skills at all. Speak to agencies. Phone them. Lots of them. Don't just email, they'll forget who you are. A 3 minute call works better than 3 emails a week. Don't just speak to agencies in your area, but go to every agency that's located in your 'employment catchment area'. Just because they have different branches of the same agency, doesn't mean they actually communicate with each other. They want to keep candidates to themselves so their branch gets the bonus! Phone up to any potential company in advance, ask who to address your letter to, ask a few well-researched questions (ie. not one that is answered in the job description) then write a short, clear letter highlighting your skills. Keep to 3, max 4 paragraphs. Adapt your CV as necessary to suit the job vacancy. Use some of their terms in your CV if it's similar to your wording. Highlight (for instance in bold) the relevant parts of your previous jobs. People don't look at your CV for long. Make sure they read what you want them to read. Make sure you have decent references. Make sure your electronic footprint is consistent: LinkedIn, but also Facebook, twitter etc are often checked. Hide public profiles until you've found work. Google your name, email address and maybe your phone number. Make sure they can't find anything about you that's dubious.
