Appalling article in the Independent (92)

This post is on the BDSM Activism web board.

Joan Smith writes about the questioning of the father of the murdered girl Milly Dowler, justifying it by the fact that he had porn and indications of an interest in BDSM. Totally ignorant:

While there are appalling excuses for human beings, who find themselves interested in bdsm, the mainstream media is still going to take a shit on bdsm as a subculture.

Sadly there is very little we can do about that.

eta this is just a generalisation that has gone off at a tangent to the above article.

Even if Milly hadn't disappeared, it is hard to see why possession of such material by the father of two teenage daughters should ever be treated as an entirely private matter. Looking at extreme pornography and acquiring restraints for use during sex are worrying behaviours, and it isn't hard to imagine circumstances – a custody battle, for example – in which they might even be interpreted as potentially abusive. Indeed, what is so extraordinary about the outpouring of sympathy for Bob Dowler is that so many commentators have been willing to overlook what this might imply about his feelings towards women, while rightly denouncing Bellfield's misogyny in the strongest possible terms.

I'm speechless.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

But it was the father - not the convicted murderer - who had the penchant for BDSM.

It had the potential to be a balanced article. I can understand why witnesses need questionning and i can understand if they'd asked the dad about his sexuality or sexual activities if there was any chance it had been him, but it seems (from what i've read and heard) that this line of questionning was used just to discredit him. Can you imagine if this had been the daughter of a gay couple and the same piece written? Actually, unfortunately i can - i just wouldn't have expected it to have been printed in The Independent.

I know, I meant that as a generalisation, probably should edit that so it says it's just a generalisation and fix the spelling mistakes before someone jumps on them.

The problem is that a lot of the liberal intelegency believe this to be the case about those of us whose sexuality is BDSM. In my everyday life I have heard people eqate BDSM as being sadistic anti-women men who pray on the vulnerable, when in reality most true Doms have nothing but respect for woman who wish to care for them!

Barbara Ellen writes in today's Observer about the Dowler family being put on trial - she has a totally different and more human take on their ordeal, saying Bob Dowler's stashed porn was irrelevant to the trial and should never have been used as evidence.

I used to have such a crush on Barbara Ellen when she wrote for the NME.

Just read that article. That Joan woman is a disgrace to journalism.

Agreed. Well, i didn't have a crush on her, but i totally could have done and you can't prove that i didn't.

Anyway - yes, the article you've shared Purvection is spot on. Faith has been restored.
