Funny thing, but when we got married in church, xxx years ago, I was adamant that I wasn't going to promise to obey Him. I thought about this the other night, and decided that I still wouldn't.
Blind obedience in play is one thing, (and sometimes neccessary to keep me safe) but unquestioning obedience out of a play scene just wouldn't work for us. Just imagine, he could insist on that vile colour for the walls...
I told him what I thought, and I think he would have looked at me as though I were a mad woman, if I'd suggested the alternative, because he would know that I'd never be able to keep it.
Vows and promises are very important to me- I can't remember the last time I broke my word. If I'm not sure that I can keep a promise, I don't make it, (this is a rule that I've been very careful to keep with respect to the children.) Oath breakers destroy trust faster than anything, after all, if you can't believe what someone is telling you... *Shrugs,* you work it out.
Of course we disagree on things, but I put (or try to put; I'm not very tactful at the best of times!) my opinion forward respectfully. No one appreciates it if you trample on their dreams, even if it is for a room painted in navy blue.*
And as for the hardest wedding vow to keep? The sickness and in health one. I just hate it when He's ill. Yuk! I really have to work hard on the sympathy!
Still, you never know, maybe one day he'll put a collar on me and extract that vow of obedience- but you can be sure it will only last while the collar's on! (Hmmm I'll have to be careful how I word it, won't I!)
*Please note these are just examples! He would be horrified to think that I thought he had such bad taste!
