For those that have asked and for those who may have been wondering, the podcast that started this was from the "Thinking Allowed" series, also broadcast on R4.

I think one big difference to IC in recent years is the existence of different groups which allows people to follow their own specialist subject and ignore the ones that they don't like. :)

and.. today it's @Causal_Sex_NSA, but its in the interest of science (to see how many hits a profile with that name generates).

:)

I had no idea that sex caused the National Security Agency ? Or are you referring to the National Sheep Association, in which case that possibly makes a bit more sense...

This is a brilliant question as I am writing a book involving the intricacies of definition.

Sounds interesting. When is it out in paperback ?

In my view, anything that spreads learning is a good thing. And as we become more generally internet savvy, we can be readier to exercise caution before acting upon the words of those inflamers, agenderists, unstable psuedo-punks and wankstationers hiding behind an avatar.

Wow. I have no idea what at least four of those words mean. I'd love to be an unstable pseudo-punk. But sadly I suspect I'm probably a wankstationer.

To take a more serious punt at the OP - I can see how social networking sites do encourage homogeneity - but I think IC probably less than others, partly because a) we're a fairly diverse and argumentative bunch to begin with, b) the AUP is fairly clear that all kinks are ok and open to discuss, and c) I'm sure there was a c) but now I can't remember it. Probably because I'm a wankstationer.

So, yeah. a) and b). That's what I say.

[item]Do you agree with the idea that social networking sites such as IC encourage homogeneity and stifle the very community they purport to represent?

If you say so.

I wouldn't say stifle (the interest out of the whole thing), I'd say more "attract the mundane".

(edited to explain politely that because my experience of this site informs me that around 90% of the people I considered lively and interesting stopped posting a fair while back, and the amount of muddleheaded, illogical, misinformed and badly conceived threads increases with neither brake nor hindrance).

oh and edited to say it's not bad for bdsm because nothing is bad for bdsm. bdsm doesn't cease to be because of websites, it just jogs on its merry way.

Have you heard, it's in the stars, next July we collide with Mars.

The short answer is 'I don't know'

I got told off for being indecisive when I gave that answer, how come you got away with it?

'cos I'm cute in that geeky kinda way :-p
