I don't get the fuss about this one... Firstly, it's only suggesting your name to people already on your friends list anyway. Secondly, if a picture is tagged with you in it it becomes subject to your security settings for pictures of you. Surely that's a good thing? I suppose its what is is capable of doing rather than what it is currently doing. And then telling people about it rather than slipping it in without announcing it. I'm sorry if my profile pic offends but...TOUGH

They didn't really hide the fact they were working on it? I remember reading an announcement on how they were developing the technology over a year ago!! At least it's not Google who are using the tech!!

I find that hard to believe. Are you saying that if I tag myself in someone's picture then it will change the security settings of that picture to match mine? What if mine and the owners clash? Don't see how that would work. No man is good enough to govern another man without that other's consent. Abraham Lincoln

The simple answer is don't tag yourself, or allow others to tag you. The problem isn't Facebook, it is the way people are perfectly happy to reveal all sorts of shit about themselves and their friends. Rohypnol means never having to say "Would you like another coffee?".

Are you on Facebook? Go to Privacy Settings and read it for yourself. You get to control who can view any picture that you are tagged in. There's an option you can tick (or not) that allows the friends of other people tagged in the photo to see them to. So to put it another way - if Alice and Bob are in a photo and Alice is not tagged, then she has no control over who can see it. If only Alice has been tagged then (if she chooses to restrict it this way) only Alice's friends can now see it. If Alice and Bob are both tagged, then depending on Alice's settings, either only her friends, or both her friends and his will now be able to see the photo. Personally I keep my kink the hell away from FB. WhT you should be
more aware of is image type search engines that are freeware and commercially available (link later) that can locate similar images although I don't know if they are good enough to nail faces. The following statement is false. The previous statement is true.

yes well if they dont they will soon I have a android app where i can take a photo af a objects and it can search and come up with the name and info. I know people laugh about the whole Big brother argument but it will be only a matter of time when cctv will scan faces like they have for car number plates. Hopefully a internet search of a facial photo will be deemed illegal, but the software will still soon be out there. “Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Edited 10 Jun 11, 10:51 AM by Gentledom14

Recently had pics of me, plus me and friends... all tagged... in a friend's album. Sent another friend to have a look at them, he could only see one of them (one of me alone), because the global permission on the album was 'friends only'. So yep, multiple restrictions do work. I was quite impressed.

I try to have no on line connections with anyone anywhere except if it's business related. however it just depends on our personal preferences. I virtually don't use FB and I obviously changed the privacy setting a few days ago when all this was in the press. As someone else said above the bigger issue is image searching. You can even work out I think from some photos where someone is physically located which can be quite useful for work purposes. The main thing will be for people to understand what technology is out there and if they don't want their children seeing a photograph of their "weiner", if that's the phrase of the day, then they perhaps might restrain themselves from shipping it off to young women at random. |
