a Perspective on switching (30)

This post is on the D/s & M/s web board.

I started looking at IC about 3 years ago and got the impression that "switch" was an insult, that "switches" were beyond the pale. The only true path was the Dom(me) or sub, no in-between.

It seems to have become more acceptable to be a switch, although there are still a sizeable number who cannot accept deviation from the "true path". Consequently, many more now openly admit to being switches as they are no longer percceived as the lowest of the low.

Perhaps it is all down to why we are living a kink life. If it is essential to your very being that you must spend all your time in a well-defined role then it may well be impossible to grasp the concept of switching. On the other hand, if kink is a part of your life, an activity that you enjoy, then switching allows you to experiment freely, find what works best for you. And as we change our moods from day to day, so we can change our roles.

For My Lady and I, both switches, who does what to whom, Dom/Domme/sub/Top/bottom is irrelevant, we simply slide into whatever role seems to fit the circumstances, mood, occasion. Neither feels it essential to maintain the role indefinitely, it may last minutes, hours or days. We have been known to change roles mid-scene.

I suppose the criticism could be made that we are using kink as just a bit of fun. Which begs the question - why else?

From our point of view, and as my tag-line says, "be a switch, double your fun"

be a switch, double your fun :-)

Maybe better to say be a switch - have the same amount of fun doing double the number of things

I sure wouldn't enjoy myself domming and nor would any poor sod who was the sub

To the OP. Switches are switches and good luck to them. I haven't seen anything much recently digging them out on here (or other sites) and the friends who I have who switch have a great time. It wouldn't work for me one bit but the good thing is that we are all different

You used an ice cream analogjy. Let me try one with crisps. For me subbing is Bacon Bites (the best snack ever invented) and domming is cheese and onion crisps - I wouldn't eat them if they were the only crisps on the planet

:) :)

Ah yes, switching. Frequently frowned upon, especially by those with aspirations of twueness. You can only assume that people feel threatened by it in some way, perhaps worry that they themselves might have the slightest leaning in the other direction, or they're jealous of the possibility that you're having twice as much fun as they are. It's the bisexuality of the BDSM world.

Or maybe we switches are just a little too touchy. We've seen the odd person have a dig, and assume that it's universally frowned upon. In a world where YKIOK, surely most people are broad-minded enough to recognise that switches have their place.

I'm primarily sub when playing with others, but I do enjoy switching with my wife. We're planning to switch at one of our regular fet nights in the not too distant future. That should confuse a few people :)

But you're not

And the only thing that has ever come close to me getting (slightly) pissed off with switches is this commnet... which I've seen on a number of occasions from them

Im a subby, but my thoughts on switches are they are lucky as they can be subby and also dominant at times.

They get both, I just get one.

I'll grant you, that was probably a poor choice of words. It's ridiculous to even attempt to quantify fun, but it is reasonable to say that I would have less of it if I had to take one role or the other full time. It's also reasonable to say that this won't be true of everyone, and many (perhaps even the majority) will have all of their needs fulfilled exclusively by one role.

What I meant to suggest was that some people are in denial of their own switchy tendencies and are perhaps a tad envious of those who get to have their cake and eat it. They're the ones that are most likely to be critical, whereas people who are happy in their chosen roles probably don't give a hoot.

Fair enough - and thanks for that

Sorry if I was a bit sharp but I've just heard that comment a few too many times - and meant seriously

:)

If it helps, I am/was/could be/maybe/something/whatever a switch and I never had that much fun, but not sure if I would have had more or less being just sub or top. I think the fun you have is down to who you are with.

Can you tell I'm bored and have nothing better to do with my life?
Well nothing more important to do.
Well nothing I can be bothered doing to do.
And you get to suffer my writings because of it.

Glad to see there is a wide outlook and views on this. It wasnt any bad digs that started this just a discussion i had with a few friends. I think generally it is accepted more now.

As i said in OP a sub may miss out, but from another perspective switches and dommes may miss out on the totality (i think that is a good phrase) of submission.

Happy with who I am, are you?

Yeah

You know, I can't help feeling that we're not really doing this thread justice. Do you think he was expecting more from us in terms of responses ?

No
